Chapter 1 - Camera Fourteen

Naomi released Vanessa's ankle.

Not quickly. Not dramatically.

She lowered the woman's foot to the marble floor as carefully as if she were returning a glass to a shelf.

That made Vanessa angrier than if Naomi had shoved her.

"Security!" Vanessa screamed. "Get this woman away from me!"

Three men in black suits moved through the frozen crowd.

Dominic Hale reached them first.

The millionaire host had been speaking with a senator near the orchestra platform when the room went silent. Now he stared at his fiancée, then at Naomi, then at the champagne flute shattered beside the dessert table.

"What happened?"

Vanessa pointed at Naomi. "She grabbed me. In front of everyone."

A murmur passed through the guests.

Naomi said nothing.

The head of security, Owen Mercer, stopped two steps away.

His eyes met Naomi's.

Something changed in his face.

Recognition.

"Ma'am?" Owen said instinctively.

Then, quieter: "Ms. Carter?"

Naomi gave him the smallest possible shake of her head.

Too late.

Vanessa heard it.

"You know her?"

Owen looked suddenly uncomfortable.

"I know of her."

Vanessa laughed sharply. "She's a housekeeper."

"Tonight," Owen said.

That single word moved through the ballroom faster than gossip.

Dominic's attention fixed on Naomi.

"What does that mean?"

Naomi finally spoke.

"It means we should deal with what actually happened before anyone deals with who I used to be."

Vanessa folded her arms. "Fine. Tell them how you attacked me."

"You kicked me."

"Because you were blocking me."

"I was carrying a tray."

"You were being insolent."

The words escaped before Vanessa could pull them back.

Several phones rose higher.

Dominic looked at her. "Insolent?"

Vanessa's face tightened.

"You know what I mean."

Naomi looked toward the ballroom ceiling.

"Camera Fourteen covers the west dessert station."

Owen followed her gaze.

"It does."

"Then there shouldn't be an argument."

Vanessa's confidence returned.

"Exactly. Pull the footage."

Owen touched his earpiece.

"Control, bring up Fourteen from the last ten minutes."

Silence.

His eyebrows drew together.

"Control?"

A voice crackled in his ear.

Owen slowly looked at Vanessa.

"What?" Dominic asked.

Owen didn't answer immediately.

Naomi did.

"The camera is dark."

Vanessa smiled.

"Convenient."

Naomi turned to her.

"Not for you."

The smile disappeared.

Naomi had spent six weeks cleaning bedrooms, carrying linen, polishing silver, and being treated as though she had no ears.

People spoke freely around staff they considered invisible.

They also forgot invisible people noticed patterns.

"Camera Fourteen didn't fail," Naomi said. "Somebody disabled it."

Vanessa rolled her eyes. "And I suppose you're going to say it was me."

Owen's hand went back to his earpiece.

Then he went very still.

Dominic saw it.

"Owen."

The security chief removed his hand from his ear.

"The camera was taken offline six minutes before the incident."

Vanessa shrugged. "So?"

Owen swallowed.

"The admin log shows whose credential did it."

For the first time all evening, Naomi saw real fear touch Vanessa Sterling's face.

Dominic's voice dropped.

"Whose?"

Owen looked directly at his fiancée.

"Vanessa's."
