Chapter 17 - The Email to Three Hundred People

Vanessa was not arrested for raising the champagne bottle.
Not immediately.
Police took it, interviewed her, and served additional warrants connected to Victor's devices and the foundation records.
The legal process was slower than the ballroom wanted justice to be.
But reputations moved fast.
By noon, Dominic publicly postponed the foundation vote.
By 12:15, he ended the engagement.
By 12:30, three board members resigned.
At 12:41, Vanessa made her final move.
Every guest from the gala received an email.
Subject:
WHAT THE HALES KNOW ABOUT YOU.
Dominic's phone began ringing before he opened it.
The attachment contained donor profiles.
Divorces.
Medical notes.
Affairs.
Business disputes.
Not all accurate.
Accurate enough.
Vanessa had decided that if she lost access to the room, she would burn the room down.
Naomi stood in the security office while Dominic read the first page.
"Oh my God."
"Don't forward it," Naomi said.
"There are hundreds of people in here."
"Then your first job is not protecting the foundation. It's notifying them their data was mishandled."
Dominic looked at her.
There was no argument left in him.
"You're right."
Owen entered with a detective.
"We traced the scheduled send. It was created last week from Vanessa's laptop."
"So she planned this too," Dominic said.
"As insurance," Naomi replied.
The detective nodded.
"It may support extortion and unauthorized access charges depending on what the forensic review shows."
Naomi's phone rang.
Mara.
"I got the email," she said.
"Are you okay?"
"No. But I'm done being quiet."
That sentence moved faster than fear.
By afternoon, Mara had given a recorded statement to investigators.
Elena followed.
Then two former staff members.
Then five.
By evening, the story was no longer "maid attacks millionaire's fiancée."
It was no longer even about a kick.
It was about what happened when powerful people decided the workers around them were too replaceable to matter.
Vanessa's attorney issued a statement denying criminal wrongdoing.
Victor's attorney issued no statement at all.
Evelyn resigned from the foundation board.
Martin offered to cooperate.
Dominic announced an independent review and refused to call it a misunderstanding.
Naomi went home for the first time in twenty-eight hours.
She sat on the edge of her bed without turning on the light.
Her phone buzzed.
An email.
Sender: Daniel Price's younger sister, Rebecca.
Naomi hadn't spoken to her in three years.
The subject line made her hands shake.
I saw the report. Please call me.
Naomi stared at it for a long time.
Then she pressed the number beneath Rebecca's signature.
Rebecca answered on the first ring.
Neither woman spoke.
Finally Rebecca whispered, "They told us you ignored the warning."
Naomi closed her eyes.
"I know."
"You didn't."
It wasn't a question.
Naomi's voice broke for the first time all night.
"No."
Rebecca began to cry.
And Naomi realized Vanessa had lost something far more valuable than an engagement.
She had lost control of the story.
