Chapter 8 - The Story Vanessa Sold First

By sunrise, Vanessa had changed the story.

That was her real talent.

Not lying.

Packaging.

At 6:12 a.m., she posted a two-minute video from the sitting room where security had placed her.

No heavy makeup.

No diamonds.

Hair slightly messy.

Voice trembling in exactly the right places.

"Last night, I was assaulted at a charity event by a household employee with a documented history of violence."

Naomi watched from Dominic's study.

Vanessa never mentioned the kick.

She said she had "lost her balance."

Never mentioned Camera Fourteen.

She said security had "mysteriously failed."

Then she held up Naomi's old protection report.

"This woman was previously involved in an overseas incident that left another security professional dead."

The video exploded online.

Twenty thousand views became two hundred thousand.

By seven, Naomi's name was trending locally.

By eight, strangers had found her dead mother's obituary.

Dominic threw his phone onto the desk.

"I'll release the ballroom footage."

"No," Naomi said.

"Why not?"

"Because then this becomes a competition between two edited clips."

"She kicked you."

"And half the internet will say I provoked her. The question isn't whether she kicked me. Three hundred people saw that. The question is why she had my sealed file before she did it."

Owen entered.

"Victor's gone."

"Gone where?"

"His hotel room is empty. Company phone left behind. Rental car returned at 4:50."

Naomi looked at the clock.

"Airport?"

"No flight under his name."

Dominic paced once.

"We go to police."

"Yes," Naomi said. "With everything. Including your mother's settlements."

That stopped him.

He looked toward the folder.

There was no painless version anymore.

If he protected the family name, Vanessa controlled the narrative.

If he told the truth, the family name burned with it.

Dominic picked up the folder.

"Then it burns."

Naomi studied him.

That was the first decision he'd made all night that sounded useful.

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

"Naomi Carter."

A man's voice said, "You always were hard to scare."

She knew it instantly.

Victor.

Owen saw her expression and started a trace request.

"Where are you?" Naomi asked.

"Close enough to watch you make the same mistake twice."

"Daniel wasn't my mistake."

"That's not what the report says."

"The report you wrote."

Victor chuckled.

"Walk away from the Hales."

"Why?"

"Because Vanessa isn't the one you should be worried about."

Naomi glanced at Dominic.

"Who is?"

Victor's voice changed.

No amusement now.

"Ask Dominic what Mara found in the donor files."

The line went dead.

Dominic was staring at her.

Naomi lowered the phone.

"What did Mara find?"

Dominic didn't answer.

And for the first time since Vanessa kicked her, Naomi wondered whether Victor had just told the truth.
