Chapter 5 - The Women Who Disappeared

By midnight, the gala no longer felt like a celebration.

It felt like a building holding its breath.

Vanessa had been moved to a private sitting room with an attorney she had summoned from Manhattan.

Dominic's mother, Evelyn Hale, had not yet been found.

And Naomi sat at a service desk with Owen while he printed the list of settlements Martin admitted approving.

Eight names.

Seven women.

One man.

Housekeeping.

Kitchen.

Wardrobe.

Driver.

Temporary event staff.

People rich guests noticed only when something went wrong.

Naomi recognized three names.

Elena Ruiz stopped working at the estate two weeks before Naomi arrived.

Jules Carter had been dismissed from the pastry team after supposedly stealing a watch.

Maribel Santos had vanished between shifts.

"Vanessa told everyone Maribel went home to Florida," Owen said.

"Did anyone check?"

Owen looked ashamed.

"No."

Naomi tapped the paper.

"Find Elena first."

"Why?"

"Because her settlement was the largest."

It took twelve minutes.

Elena was living thirty miles away with her sister.

When Owen called, she hung up.

Naomi called from her own phone.

"My name is Naomi Carter. I work at the Hale estate."

Silence.

Then: "Not anymore, you don't."

"Probably not."

That earned a tiny breath that might have been a laugh.

"Did she hurt you?" Elena asked.

Naomi looked at the bruise beginning beneath her ribs where Vanessa's heel had connected.

"She tried."

Another silence.

"Come alone," Elena said. "And don't bring Mr. Hale."

Naomi arrived at a small duplex at 1:15 a.m.

Elena opened the door with a chain still attached.

She was forty, tired, and terrified.

"Show me your hands."

Naomi did.

Elena let her in.

On the kitchen table sat a cheap phone wrapped in a dish towel.

"I kept this because nobody believed me," Elena said.

She pressed play.

Vanessa's voice filled the room.

Cold. Clear.

"You sign tonight, or I make sure no house in this county hires you again."

Elena's recorded voice trembled. "You pushed me."

"You fell."

"You pushed me down three stairs."

"Then learn to walk better."

Naomi closed her eyes for one second.

Weeks of humiliation had taught her Vanessa enjoyed power most when the other person couldn't fight back.

"Why didn't you go to police?" Naomi asked.

Elena looked toward the dark window.

"I did."

Naomi turned.

"What happened?"

"A woman came to my house the next morning. She paid my hospital bill. Paid three months of rent. Told me Vanessa would be married soon and things would calm down."

"Who?"

A car door shut outside.

Elena's face drained.

"That's her."

Headlights swept across the blinds.

Naomi moved beside the window and looked through the edge.

A silver Bentley had stopped at the curb.

An elegant woman stepped out.

White hair.

Camel coat.

Dominic's mother.

Evelyn Hale looked directly at the duplex.

Then she lifted both empty hands where Naomi could see them.

"I didn't come to threaten her," she called through the door.

Naomi opened it only three inches.

"Then why are you here?"

Evelyn's answer broke something open in the night.

"Because I'm the one who paid every settlement."
