Chapter 6 - The Price of Silence

Evelyn Hale entered Elena's kitchen without removing her coat.

She looked smaller there than she did in magazines.

No ballroom.

No diamonds.

No family name printed on a donor wall.

Just a seventy-year-old woman sitting across from somebody she had paid to disappear.

Elena didn't offer coffee.

"You said she would stop," Elena told her.

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

"I believed she would."

"No. You hoped I would."

The sentence landed harder than shouting.

Naomi stayed standing.

"Why protect Vanessa?"

Evelyn took a slow breath.

"The Hale Foundation was about to complete a merger with a children's medical trust. The board vote was fragile. Vanessa had become the public face of our fundraising campaign. If stories about her abusing staff surfaced, the vote could collapse."

Elena stared at her.

"So my head hitting a stair was a business problem."

"I'm ashamed of what I did."

"That doesn't answer me."

Evelyn nodded.

"Yes. At the time, that is how I treated it."

Naomi respected the sentence only because Evelyn didn't decorate it.

"Did Dominic know?"

"No."

"Martin?"

"Enough to process the agreements."

"Owen?"

"No."

"Vanessa?"

Evelyn's mouth tightened.

"She knew I was cleaning up after her."

Of course she did.

That was the real poison of rescue without accountability.

Every check Evelyn wrote told Vanessa the same thing:

There would always be another adult willing to erase the consequence.

"Why come here tonight?" Naomi asked.

Evelyn looked at Elena.

"Because I saw Vanessa kick you on a guest's livestream. And because I realized I had spent a year teaching her that people like you could be purchased."

Elena's eyes filled.

"People like me?"

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"People without my money."

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then Evelyn reached into her purse slowly.

Naomi watched her hands.

She removed a folder.

"These are copies of every agreement. I brought them because Dominic needs to see all of it."

Naomi took the folder.

Eight settlements.

The amounts matched Martin's list.

But there was a ninth tab.

No employee name.

No injury description.

Just initials.

M.R.

Payment: $600,000.

"Who's M.R.?" Naomi asked.

Evelyn's composure cracked.

"That one wasn't an employee."

"Who was she?"

Evelyn looked at the table.

"Dominic's cousin. Mara Reed. She was the foundation's compliance director."

"What happened to her?"

"She accused Vanessa of using donor information for private leverage. Then she had what everyone called a breakdown."

"Called?"

Evelyn looked at Naomi.

"Mara always said she wasn't sick. She said someone was making her look unstable."

Naomi felt the room change.

"Where is she now?"

Evelyn answered quietly.

"A private recovery center in Connecticut."

Elena frowned. "For what?"

Evelyn's next words made Naomi forget the bruise in her side.

"For an overdose Mara swears she never took."
