Chapter 1 - The Cloth in His Hands

Helena Rusk kicked over the bucket of soapy water beside Leo and watched the gray water spread across the polished garage floor.
The seven-year-old flinched.
“Start over,” she said.
Leo stared at the water running under the front tire of her white Bentley.
Helena pushed the cleaning cloth back into his hands.
“If you clean badly, you go hungry.”
Leo lowered himself onto one knee.
His fingers were red from cold water. The estate garage was heated, but Helena had opened the side door because she said the smell of soap bothered her.
“Daddy said I’m not supposed to miss dinner.”
Helena’s eyes narrowed.
“Your father says a lot of things when he’s home.”
At the far end of the garage, Carmine DeLuca stopped speaking in the middle of a sentence.
Two bodyguards stood beside him, discussing a security problem at one of the family warehouses. Carmine had returned from Chicago nearly four hours early. No one inside the house had been told.
He looked past the men.
Leo was kneeling beside the Bentley.
Helena stood over him, swinging her key fob around one finger.
Carmine walked toward them.
Leo saw him first.
“Daddy.”
The word came out small.
Helena turned.
For half a second, surprise flashed across her face. Then it vanished beneath a practiced smile.
“Carmine. You’re early.”
He did not answer.
His eyes moved to the cloth in Leo’s hands.
Then to the overturned bucket.
Then to the plate sitting on a workbench twenty feet away.
A sandwich.
Untouched.
“Why is he on the floor?” Carmine asked.
Helena stepped between him and Leo.
“He scratched my car. Debt gets worked off.”
Carmine looked at the Bentley.
“Where?”
Helena pointed toward the rear passenger door.
A thin white mark crossed the paint.
Carmine crouched.
He rubbed it once with his thumb.
The mark disappeared.
Wax.
Not a scratch.
He stood.
Helena’s jaw tightened.
“Leo lied to me.”
Leo shook his head quickly.
“I didn’t.”
Helena reached for his arm.
Carmine caught her wrist before she touched him.
“Don’t.”
His voice was quiet.
That made both bodyguards stop moving.
Helena pulled her hand back.
“You’re embarrassing me in front of your staff.”
Carmine took the cloth from Leo and dropped it into the spilled water.
“I’m looking at my son on his knees.”
“He needs discipline.”
“He needs dinner.”
Helena laughed once.
“You’re never here. You don’t see what he’s like.”
Carmine turned toward Leo.
The boy kept his eyes on the floor.
That bothered him more than tears would have.
“Leo.”
Nothing.
Carmine lowered himself until they were eye level.
“Look at me.”
Leo slowly raised his face.
There was a faint yellow bruise near his jaw.
Carmine felt something cold move through him.
“What happened there?”
Leo glanced at Helena.
She answered first.
“He fell off the garden wall.”
“I asked him.”
Silence.
Leo’s lips trembled.
“Helena says I forget things.”
Carmine looked at her.
“What things?”
“She says I fall a lot.”
Helena’s face changed.
“Leo.”
Carmine stood.
“Go inside with Marco.”
One of the bodyguards stepped forward.
Leo didn’t move.
Instead, he slipped one hand into his pocket and pulled out a small red plastic key.
“I found this under her bed.”
Helena lunged.
Carmine moved faster.
He took the key from Leo.
A paper tag was tied around it with black thread.
GARAGE 4.
Carmine looked toward the back wall.
His estate had three garages.
There was no Garage 4.
Helena went pale.
Then Carmine noticed something even stranger.
The handwriting on the tag belonged to his dead wife.
Alessia had been dead for five years.
And somehow, a key in her handwriting had been hidden beneath Helena’s bed.
