Chapter 7 - Grandmother's Lie

Teresa DeLuca arrived at the estate at noon wearing black gloves and an expression that had frightened bankers for forty years.
She was seventy-two.
Small.
Elegant.
Unimpressed by almost everyone.
She kissed Leo’s forehead first.
Then she looked at the bruise near his jaw.
Her face became stone.
“Where is Helena?”
“Not your concern yet,” Carmine said.
Teresa’s eyes moved to him.
“Yet?”
He led her into the study.
Marco remained by the door.
Carmine placed the airline manifest on the desk.
Teresa did not touch it.
“Why didn’t you board the flight to Rome?”
Silence.
“Mother.”
“I was trying to save your wife.”
Carmine stared at her.
“You went to Ames.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Alessia called me.”
That hurt in a way Carmine had not expected.
Alessia had called his mother.
Not him.
Teresa removed her gloves.
“She discovered someone was moving money through the family companies. She thought Salvatore was responsible. Then she found documents linking the payments to medical evaluations, private guardianship firms, and shell charities.”
“Grey money?”
“Control money.”
Carmine frowned.
Teresa looked toward the windows.
“Your father believed loyalty could be purchased. Salvatore believed fear worked better. Alessia discovered a third business growing underneath both of them—legal control of heirs.”
“Explain.”
“Rich families with unstable children. Elderly founders with memory problems. Addicted sons. Divorcing daughters. A doctor declares someone impaired, a guardian is appointed, and suddenly voting shares move without being sold.”
Carmine thought of Leo’s forged behavioral file.
“Who ran it?”
Teresa shook her head.
“I never learned the whole structure.”
“Why did you go to Ames?”
“To make him stop.”
“Did he?”
“No.”
Her voice changed.
“He told me Alessia was already marked as unstable.”
Carmine felt cold.
“What does that mean?”
“A psychiatric record had been created in her name. If she accused anyone publicly, they were prepared to call her paranoid.”
“Who was prepared?”
Teresa looked at Salvatore’s name on the audit.
“Sal was involved.”
“But not alone.”
“No.”
Carmine leaned closer.
“Did you know Helena was his daughter?”
Teresa hesitated.
That was enough.
“You knew.”
“I learned two years ago.”
“And you let her into my house.”
“I thought keeping her close would make Sal careless.”
Carmine’s voice dropped.
“You used my son as bait.”
“No.”
“You knew who she was.”
“I did not know she would hurt him.”
“Neither did I. That is not an excuse.”
Teresa looked older suddenly.
“No.”
For once, she did not argue.
Then Leo appeared in the doorway holding a photograph.
“Grandma?”
Teresa turned.
Leo held up the picture from Alessia’s hidden files.
“Why are you in Mommy’s car?”
Carmine looked at the photo.
He had missed it before.
In the rearview mirror, barely visible behind Alessia, was Teresa.
The timestamp showed the image had been taken twenty minutes before the crash.
Teresa stared at it.
Then she whispered, “Because I was supposed to die with her.”
