Chapter 10 - The Boy Who Remembered the Rules

Carmine did not go alone.

He also did not take an army.

Nina coordinated with federal investigators who had already begun building a case around forged guardianship records and interstate financial fraud.

Marco drove.

Carmine sat in the passenger seat with the Belladonna drive in his jacket.

A copy.

The real evidence was already duplicated in four locations.

Alessia had taught him something from the grave.

Never carry the only truth into a room where someone wants you dead.

The old railyard sat beyond a line of abandoned warehouses near the river.

Carmine entered Warehouse 12 alone.

Leo sat on a metal chair beneath a hanging work light.

His hands were free.

Helena stood behind him.

Salvatore stood twenty feet away.

Carmine looked at Helena first.

“You took him.”

Her face was white.

“I brought him here.”

“That is the same thing.”

“I didn’t know Sal had men waiting.”

Salvatore laughed.

“She always did have a problem finishing what she started.”

Leo looked at Carmine.

“I’m okay.”

Carmine nodded once.

“Good.”

Salvatore held out his hand.

“The drive.”

“You threatened a child for corporate votes.”

Salvatore’s expression hardened.

“Do not reduce this to money.”

“Then explain it.”

“Your father built an empire by understanding weakness. I made sure that empire survived weak heirs.”

Carmine almost laughed.

“You mean children.”

“I mean risk.”

Leo frowned.

“That’s a dumb word for people.”

Salvatore looked at him.

“Quiet.”

Leo did not flinch.

That mattered.

Carmine removed the drive.

“Let him walk to me.”

Salvatore nodded at Helena.

She touched Leo’s shoulder.

Leo stood.

Then he suddenly dropped flat.

A deafening crash came from the side door.

Marco’s team entered.

Federal agents came through the rear.

Salvatore reached inside his coat.

Carmine did not move toward him.

He moved toward Leo.

That choice saved both of them.

Helena grabbed Salvatore’s arm before he could pull the weapon completely free.

“Stop!”

He struck her.

She fell.

Agents tackled Salvatore against a steel column.

Carmine covered Leo’s head with both arms until the shouting stopped.

When he finally looked up, Helena was sitting against the wall holding her bleeding mouth.

Leo whispered, “She helped me.”

Carmine looked at her.

Helena started crying.

“I told him I would get the drive,” she said. “I thought if I brought Leo, he wouldn’t hurt him because he needed the guardianship alive.”

“That was your plan?” Carmine asked.

“I know.”

Her voice broke.

“I know how stupid that sounds now.”

“It does not sound stupid.”

She looked up hopefully.

“It sounds criminal.”

Hope vanished.

Good.

Consequences mattered.

As agents led Salvatore away, he twisted toward Carmine.

“You still don’t understand.”

Carmine held Leo closer.

“What?”

Salvatore smiled through blood on his lip.

“I didn’t create the guardianship network.”

“I know. My father did.”

Salvatore shook his head.

“No.”

Then he looked straight at Teresa, who had just entered behind the agents.

“Ask your mother who the first client was.”

Teresa stopped walking.

And Carmine knew, before she said a word, that the answer was going to be someone inside their own family.
