Chapter 4 - The Bruises That Became Evidence

Carmine did not confront Salvatore that night.

Anger wanted speed.

Fatherhood demanded proof.

He moved Leo into the guest wing beside his own bedroom and replaced every household security code before midnight.

Helena was escorted to a separate apartment on the property under guard.

Not a cell.

Not freedom either.

At ten the next morning, Dr. Naomi Keller arrived.

Carmine had known her for years. She had treated children injured in a charity clinic his foundation funded. She had no connection to his lawyers or family businesses.

Leo sat on the edge of the bed while she examined him.

Carmine remained near the door.

“Do I have to tell everything?” Leo asked.

Dr. Keller shook her head.

“You only have to tell what you want me to know.”

Leo glanced at Carmine.

“Will Daddy get mad?”

“At you?”

Leo nodded.

Carmine’s throat tightened.

“No.”

“You promise?”

“I promise.”

Leo pulled up his sleeve.

There were finger-shaped marks fading near his upper arm.

Carmine looked away for one second.

Not because he could not face them.

Because Leo was watching his face.

A child should not have to manage a parent’s rage.

Dr. Keller documented everything.

Then she asked, “Who told you the bruises were your fault?”

Leo whispered, “Helena said bad kids make adults angry.”

Carmine closed his eyes.

After the examination, Dr. Keller asked to speak privately.

“These injuries are consistent with repeated rough handling,” she said. “Some are older than the last month.”

“How long?”

“Possibly six months.”

Carmine had spent seventy-eight nights away from home during that period.

He knew because he made Marco print the travel records.

Seventy-eight nights.

He had told himself he was protecting Leo by keeping enemies away from the estate.

Instead, his absence had created the room Helena needed.

Dr. Keller handed him a second packet.

“I also reviewed the behavioral reports you found.”

“And?”

“Some use language copied from templates. Others describe symptoms that do not match what Leo’s school documented.”

“Who signed them?”

“Dr. Peter Ames.”

Carmine knew the name.

Ames had evaluated several defendants for one of Salvatore’s attorneys.

Carmine called his lawyer, Nina Park.

She arrived with two forensic accountants and a digital security specialist.

By afternoon, they had traced payments to Ames.

Not from Helena.

From a consulting company owned by Salvatore’s nephew.

Nina looked at Carmine across the study table.

“This is coordinated.”

“How far?”

“We don’t know yet.”

The security specialist turned his laptop around.

He had recovered deleted emails from Helena’s old phone backup.

One message from Salvatore read:

THE BOY DOES NOT NEED TO BE HURT. HE NEEDS TO BE DOCUMENTED.

Carmine stared at it.

Helena had gone beyond instructions.

That did not make Salvatore innocent.

It made the conspiracy worse.

Then another recovered message appeared.

Sent by Helena eight months earlier.

I FOUND THE ORIGINAL CRASH REPORT. CARMINE DIDN’T ORDER IT.

Salvatore’s reply came four minutes later.

STOP LOOKING INTO ALESSIA OR LEO WILL LOSE MORE THAN HIS MOTHER.

Carmine looked up.

Nina’s face had gone pale.

Because the threat was dated two weeks before Helena moved into Carmine’s house.

Salvatore had not merely used Helena to gain control of Leo.

He had threatened the child before Carmine ever met her.
