Chapter 11 - The First Client

The first client had been Carmine’s grandfather.

But the first target had been Teresa.

That was the distinction Teresa made in the library three hours later.

“My father-in-law believed I was dangerous,” she said.

“To him?” Carmine asked.

“To the family structure.”

Teresa had come from a wealthy legal family in Boston. She understood trusts, voting agreements, and corporate governance better than most of the men around her.

When she married Carmine’s father, she began asking questions about shell companies and succession plans.

So the DeLucas hired Peter Ames.

Not to treat her.

To document her.

Mood instability.

Postpartum anxiety.

Paranoia.

All the same words later used against Alessia.

“They were preparing to have me declared incapable of controlling my own inheritance,” Teresa said.

“Did Dad know?”

“He approved it.”

Carmine sat back.

The pattern had not started with Salvatore.

Salvatore had inherited it.

Then used it.

Helena had tried to profit from it.

And Carmine had lived his entire life inside a machine he never saw.

Nina entered with another update.

“Federal agents found seven active family-control cases linked to Ames.”

“Seven?”

“Different surnames. Same evaluators. Same guardianship law firm. Same shell charities.”

Carmine looked at Leo through the glass doors. The boy was outside with Marco throwing a tennis ball for the old family dog.

“How many children?”

“Three minors. Four adults.”

“Freeze everything we can.”

Nina nodded.

“One more thing.”

She placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Helena entering a courthouse eight months earlier.

Beside her walked a man Carmine recognized from business dinners.

Adrian Cole.

Chief financial officer of DeLuca Maritime.

Carmine stared.

“Adrian?”

“He drafted the Belladonna voting analysis.”

“Why?”

“Because if Leo’s shares moved to a guardian, Adrian had enough proxy commitments to force a board vote.”

Salvatore wanted control.

But Adrian had designed the takeover.

Carmine stood.

“Where is he?”

Nina’s phone buzzed.

She read the message.

“On his way to the annual shareholders dinner.”

Carmine checked the time.

The dinner began in forty minutes.

Nearly every major voting shareholder would be present.

Carmine smiled without humor.

“Good.”

Teresa looked at him.

“What are you going to do?”

“Something I should have learned years ago.”

“What?”

“Use a room full of witnesses.”

At the shareholders dinner, Adrian was already at the podium when Carmine entered with Leo beside him.

The room went silent.

Adrian smiled.

“Carmine. I heard there was trouble at the estate.”

“There was.”

Carmine handed Nina a folder.

She distributed copies across the front tables.

Adrian’s smile faded.

Because the first page was not a financial statement.

It was his signed payment authorization to Dr. Peter Ames.

And the date showed he had started paying Ames to build a case against Leo nine months before Helena ever punished the boy.
