Chapter 12 - The Dinner Where Nobody Laughed

Adrian Cole did not run.

That was what made him dangerous.

He adjusted his cuff links and looked around the room as if Carmine had handed out a bad quarterly report instead of evidence of a conspiracy against a child.

“These documents are being mischaracterized.”

Nina almost smiled.

“Then characterize them.”

Adrian looked at Leo.

Carmine stepped slightly in front of his son.

“Look at me.”

Adrian did.

“You paid Ames.”

“I retained medical consultants for succession risk.”

“On my seven-year-old.”

“On the beneficiary of a controlling trust.”

The room changed.

Not morally.

Financially.

That was enough to make several directors sit straighter.

Adrian continued.

“If something happens to you, Carmine, Leo becomes the center of a governance crisis. Alessia designed it that way.”

“She designed a brake.”

“She designed leverage.”

Carmine looked at the shareholders.

“Listen carefully. The man on that stage thinks my son is a governance problem.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“I think the company needs continuity.”

Leo tugged Carmine’s sleeve.

“Can I say something?”

Carmine hesitated.

Then nodded.

Leo faced the room.

“I don’t want your company.”

Several people looked uncomfortable.

Leo continued.

“I wanted dinner.”

Silence.

Carmine felt his chest tighten.

Adrian looked away first.

Nina took the podium.

“An emergency independent audit has identified payments from corporate accounts to medical evaluators, guardianship consultants, and private investigators. The board has authority to suspend officers pending investigation.”

One director stood.

“I move to suspend Adrian Cole immediately.”

Another seconded.

Adrian laughed.

“You think this stops with me?”

Carmine watched him.

“No.”

“Good.”

Adrian stepped away from the podium.

“Because Salvatore was right about one thing. He did not invent the network.”

“We know.”

Adrian smiled.

“But you still think it belongs to the DeLucas.”

Carmine frowned.

Adrian nodded toward Nina’s packet.

“Check the law firm that filed the first guardianship petition against Teresa.”

Nina searched her tablet.

Her face changed.

“What?” Carmine asked.

“The firm still exists.”

“Who owns it?”

“Not a DeLuca.”

She turned the screen.

HARTWELL FAMILY PROTECTION PARTNERS.

Carmine knew the name.

Every wealthy family did.

Judges retired there.

Former prosecutors advised there.

Private banks referred clients there.

Adrian’s smile widened.

“Your family was never the machine.”

He looked at Leo.

“You were a customer.”

Federal agents entered through the side doors to arrest Adrian on fraud charges.

As they handcuffed him, he leaned toward Carmine.

“If you want to know who ordered Alessia’s crash, stop looking at the people who stole money.”

Carmine stared at him.

“Who do I look at?”

Adrian’s answer was quiet.

“The people who decided she was legally easier to control dead than alive.”
