Chapter 10 - Blood and Concrete

We cut between containers until the floodlight was gone. Tyler’s breathing was fast against my neck.

“Are they gonna kill us?”

“No.” I lied. “Stay quiet.”

I found a gap between two rusted boxcars and pushed him inside. “Don’t come out. No matter what.”

He nodded, eyes huge.

I turned back toward the gunfire.

Marcus was on the ground near the tall man’s body. Still moving. Barely. Two men stood over him. One raised a pistol.

I shot that one first. Center mass. He dropped. The second spun. I put two rounds into him before he could fire.

I reached Marcus. Blood soaked his shirt from a wound high on the chest.

“Go,” he coughed. “Get the kid out.”

I hauled him up anyway. He cursed but stayed on his feet.

We made it ten steps before more men came around the container. Three of them.

I fired until the gun clicked empty. Two went down. The third kept coming.

Marcus pushed me aside and tackled the last man. They hit the ground fighting for the rifle.

I looked for anything. A piece of pipe. A rock. Anything.

The man got the upper hand. He straddled Marcus and raised a knife.

I didn’t think. I just moved.

I hit him from the side with everything I had left. We rolled. The knife scraped concrete. My hand found it. I drove it up once. Hard.

The man went still.

Marcus lay on his back, breathing in short wet pulls. “Tyler…”

“He’s safe.”

Sirens again. Closer this time. Real ones.

Marcus grabbed my wrist. His grip was weak. “The drive… they still have copies. This isn’t over.”

His eyes unfocused.

I shook him. “Marcus. Stay with me.”

He didn’t answer.

Blue and red lights washed over the containers. Voices shouted orders.

I stood up, hands empty, and walked back to the gap where I’d hidden my son.

Tyler was still there. Crying quietly.

I pulled him out and held him while the cops flooded the yard.
