Chapter 3 - Three Shots

I moved first.
I yanked Marcus sideways and threw him into the gunman. The pistol went off. The bullet tore through the kitchen cabinet behind me. Wood exploded.
Second shot. This one grazed my shoulder. Hot fire ripped across the muscle. I didn’t stop.
I slammed into both of them. We hit the floor in a heap. The knife skittered away. The gun clattered under the fridge.
Marcus scrambled for it. I got there first. My hand closed around the grip just as the hoodie guy kicked me in the ribs. Air left my lungs. I still pulled the trigger.
The shot was loud in the small kitchen. The guy jerked once and went still. Blood spread under him fast.
Marcus froze. Hands up. Eyes locked on the body.
“Jesus Christ, Jake—”
I pointed the gun at him. My shoulder burned. Blood ran down my arm and dripped onto the tile.
“Start from the beginning. Why was she wearing your ring?”
Marcus swallowed. “She was leaving you.”
“Bullshit.”
“It’s true. We’ve been… for almost a year. She was gonna tell you after Tyler’s birthday. Then something changed. She got scared.”
I kept the gun steady. “Scared of what?”
Marcus glanced at the dead man on the floor. “Of the people she was mixed up with. Money. A lot of it. She took something that didn’t belong to her.”
My ears rang. The dead guy’s blood was almost touching my shoe.
“What did she take?”
Marcus’s voice dropped. “A hard drive. Names. Accounts. Stuff that gets people killed.”
I stared at him. Outside, sirens finally started to rise in the distance.
“And you killed her for it.”
He shook his head hard. “I didn’t. I swear to God I didn’t. They did. I was trying to get her out.”
The sirens got louder.
Marcus looked at the front door, then at me. “We need to leave. Now. Or we’re both done.”
I didn’t lower the gun.

But I didn’t pull the trigger either.
