Chapter 11 - After the Rain
They separated us at the hospital.
Tyler got checked over. Not a scratch on him. Just shock. They let me sit with him until he fell asleep in the little bed.
Then the detectives took me to a small room with bad coffee and a camera in the corner.
I told them most of it. Not all. Some things didn’t need to be on record.
Marcus didn’t make it through surgery. The nurse who told me had kind eyes and a tired voice.
I sat in the hallway for a long time after that. Staring at nothing.
Elena was gone. Marcus was gone. The drive was in evidence. The men from the rail yard were either dead or in cuffs.
But Marcus’s last words kept looping in my head.
They still have copies.
A detective named Ruiz sat down across from me around 4 a.m.
“Your wife’s phone. We pulled the last messages. She was scared. She was also smart. She left something for you.”
He handed me a small envelope. My name on the front in Elena’s handwriting.
Inside was a single key and a scrap of paper with an address.
A storage unit. Across town.
Ruiz watched me. “You want a ride?”
I looked at the key. Then at the door to Tyler’s room.
“Yeah. But my kid comes with me.”
Ruiz nodded once. “Fair enough.”
Outside, the rain had finally stopped. The sky was starting to turn gray.
I didn’t know what was waiting in that storage unit.
