Chapter 6 - Running on Empty

The shot was deafening in the small room. The woman dropped. I didn’t wait to see if she was dead.
I went out the window. Landed hard in the side yard. Pain shot up my bad shoulder. Marcus was already spinning the Audi around.
I dove into the passenger seat. “Go.”
He floored it. Tires screamed. Behind us, the man from the kitchen came out firing. Bullets punched the rear window. Glass sprayed the back seat.
Marcus didn’t flinch. “Where’s the drive?”
I held it up. “They have Tyler.”
His face went white. “Shit.”
“You knew they might.”
“I didn’t know they’d move this fast.”
We hit the highway again. Rain started harder. The wipers couldn’t keep up.
“Call them,” I said. “Whoever’s running this. I want my son.”
Marcus shook his head. “It doesn’t work like that. These people don’t negotiate.”
“Then we make them.”
He looked at me like I’d lost my mind. Maybe I had.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. Unknown number. I answered on speaker.
A calm male voice. “You have something that belongs to us. We have something that belongs to you. Trade at the old rail yard. One hour. Come alone or the boy dies first.”
The line went dead.
Marcus stared at the road. “That’s a kill box. You walk in there, you don’t walk out.”
I checked the magazine. One round left.
“Then I don’t walk in alone.”
Marcus’s hands tightened on the wheel. For the first time since I’d kicked his door in, he looked scared for real.
“Jake… there’s something else you need to know about Elena.”
I turned and looked at him.
He didn’t finish the sentence.

Because headlights appeared behind us. Closing fast.
