Chapter 12 - What She Left Behind

The storage unit smelled like dust and old cardboard.
Tyler stayed close to my leg while I unlocked the door and rolled it up.
Inside: one metal filing cabinet and a duffel bag.
The bag held cash. A lot of it. And a second hard drive, identical to the first.
The filing cabinet had folders. Bank records. Photos. Names I didn’t recognize. And one letter in Elena’s handwriting addressed to me.

I watched the taillights disappear. “Not anymore.”
Tyler fell asleep against the door on the ride home.
I kept one hand on the duffel and the other on the letter in my pocket.
Elena was gone.
But the war she’d started wasn’t.
And I was done running.
Whatever came next, I would meet it standing up.
For her.
For Tyler.
And for the man I used to call brother.
