Chapter 9 - No Way Out

Tyler clung to me. I kept one arm around him and the gun in the other.
Marcus spoke first. “You got what you wanted. Let them go.”
The tall man laughed. “You think this was only about the drive? Elena made promises. She broke them. Someone has to pay the balance.”
He looked at me. “You. Or the boy. Your choice.”
My mouth went dry. “Take me.”
Tyler’s fingers dug into my jacket. “Dad, no—”
The tall man nodded like he’d expected that. “Bring the car around.”
One of the men started walking toward a van parked deeper in the yard.
Marcus’s voice was low. “Jake. When I move, you run. Don’t look back.”
I didn’t answer. I just shifted Tyler so his feet touched the ground.
The tall man turned to give an order.
Marcus raised the rifle and fired.
The shot took the tall man in the chest. He went down hard. Chaos exploded. Muzzle flashes lit the containers. Bullets sparked off metal.
I scooped Tyler up and ran.
We made it to the first row of containers before the return fire found us. A round punched the metal six inches from my head.
Marcus was still shooting. Covering us.
I didn’t look back like he said.
But I heard him yell once. Short. Cut off.
Then only the sound of boots on wet gravel behind us.
May you like
They were coming.
