Chapter 4 - The Hard Drive

We left the body on the kitchen floor and went out the back.
Marcus had a black Audi parked behind the house. Keys already in his hand like he’d planned for this. We didn’t talk until the city lights were behind us and the highway stretched black and empty.
My shoulder throbbed. I’d wrapped it with a kitchen towel. Blood still seeped through.
“Where’s the drive?” I asked.
Marcus kept his eyes on the road. “She hid it. Said it was the only insurance she had.”
“Where.”
“Your house. In Tyler’s room. Behind the baseboard under his bed. She told me last week.”
I laughed once. It sounded wrong. “She put stolen shit in our kid’s room.”
Marcus didn’t answer.
We pulled up two blocks from my place. The street was quiet. No cop cars yet. The rain had slowed to a drizzle.
I went in through the side gate. Marcus waited in the car with the engine running.
Tyler’s night-light was still on. The little dinosaur one Elena bought him last Christmas. I stood in the doorway for three full seconds just breathing. Then I dropped to my knees, pulled the bed out, and found the loose baseboard.
The hard drive was small. Black. No labels.
I shoved it in my jacket pocket and stood up.
That’s when I heard the front door open.
Soft footsteps. Not Marcus.

Someone else was in the house.
