Elena sat at my kitchen table. Drank my coffee. Told me everything.
"There were twelve of them. Your father. My father. Ten others. They called themselves The Circle."
"The Circle?"
"They ran everything. Drugs. Guns. Money laundering. Murder. They were untouchable."
"Were?"
"My father died last year. Heart attack. Then two others. Car accident. Then three more. House fire. Now there are five left. Including me."
"You're part of this?"
"I was. I'm trying to get out. But they won't let me."
"Who won't?"
"The ones who are left. They're cleaning house. Eliminating anyone who might talk."
"And you think I'm next?"
"You have the ledger. The original. The one that names everyone. They want it."
"I don't have it."
"I know. It's with Detective Chen. But they don't know that. They think you have it."
"So they're coming for me."
"Yes."
I sat back. Rubbed my face.
"This is insane. I left this life behind. I moved across the country. I changed my name."
"It doesn't matter. They have resources. They have reach. They'll find you eventually."
"What do you want from me?"
"I want to help you. I want to stop them. Before they kill us all."
"How?"
"I have a plan. But I need your help."
"What kind of plan?"
She leaned forward. Eyes hard.
"We kill them first."
