Chapter 12 - The First Move

---
I called Elena.
"I'm in."
"Good. Meet me at this address. Tomorrow. Noon."
She gave me an address. A warehouse. Just like the one where I'd confronted Victor.
"Who's the target?"
"Marcus Webb. Detective. Corrupt. He's been on The Circle's payroll for thirty years."
"The one from the ledger."
"The same."
"What's the plan?"
"I'll explain when you get here. Just be ready."
She hung up.
I sat there. Thinking.
This was insane. I was a bookstore owner. A mother. Not a killer.
But Dad's voice kept echoing.
Protect yourself. And your family.
I went to the basement. Opened the safe. Took out the gun. The one Dad had given me. The one I'd never used.
I loaded it. Checked the safety. Holstered it.
Then I went upstairs. Kissed Leo goodnight.
"I love you."
"I love you too, Mommy."
"Be good for Mrs. Patterson, okay?"
"Where are you going?"
"To take care of something."
"What?"
"Something important."
She looked at me. Those eyes. So knowing.
"You're not coming back, are you?"
"Of course I am."
"You're lying."
I hugged her. Held her tight.
"I'll be back. I promise."
She didn't believe me. I could see it in her eyes.
But I meant it.
I'd come back.
Or I'd die trying.
