Chapter 13 - The Warehouse

---

Elena was waiting when I arrived.

Two other people with her. A man. A woman. Both armed.

"This is Tom and Rachel. They're with me."

"With you how?"

"We all have reasons to want The Circle gone."

I looked at them. Hard faces. Dead eyes.

"Let's go."

We entered the warehouse. Dark. Empty. Echoing.

"The target is in the back office. He's meeting with a contact. We go in, we take them both."

"Take them?"

"Alive. We need information."

"And if they resist?"

Elena looked at me. "Then we do what we have to do."

We moved through the warehouse. Quiet. Careful.

The office was at the end of a long hallway. Light spilled from under the door. Voices.

Elena held up a hand. Signaled.

Tom kicked the door open.

Two men inside. One was Marcus Webb. I recognized him from the photograph in the ledger.

The other was... older. Gray hair. Expensive suit.

"Freeze!"

Webb reached for his gun. Rachel shot him in the shoulder. He screamed. Fell.

The older man just sat there. Calm.

"Elena. I was wondering when you'd show up."

"Hello, Father."

Father?

The older man smiled. "You brought friends. How nice."

"He's the target," Elena said. "Not Webb. Him."

"Who is he?"

"My father. The last of The Circle. The one who's been killing everyone."

"You said your father was dead."

"I lied."

The old man stood up. Hands raised. Still calm.

"You can't kill me, Elena. I'm your father."

"You stopped being my father when you ordered the hit on Mom."

"Your mother was a liability."

"So are you."

She raised her gun.

"Wait." I stepped forward. "We need information. He knows where the other ledgers are."

Elena looked at me. "The other ledgers don't matter. Once he's dead, it's over."

"It's not over. There are more people. More circles. We need to stop them all."

She hesitated.

Her father smiled. "She's right, you know. Kill me, and you'll never find them. Let me live, and I'll give you everything."

Elena's hand shook.

"Don't listen to him," I said. "He's a liar. He'll say anything to survive."

"I know." She lowered the gun. "That's why I'm not going to kill him."

She walked to him. Stood face to face.

"I'm going to make him talk."
