Chapter 19 - The Hunt

---
Victor found us in two weeks.
I don't know how. I don't want to know.
He was waiting in the driveway when we came home from the grocery store.
Leo was in the back seat. Asleep.
Victor knocked on the window. Smiled. That same empty smile.
"Hello, Maya."
I locked the doors. Reached for the gun in my purse.
"Don't. I just want to talk."
"You threatened my son."
"I was angry. I didn't mean it."
"You tried to kill him."
"I was trying to scare you. To make you give me the ledger."
"It's too late for that. The whole world has the ledger now."
"I know." He leaned against the car. Casual. Relaxed. "That's why I'm here."
"What do you want?"
"To make a deal."
"What kind of deal?"
"I'll leave you alone. You and Leo. Forever."
"In exchange for what?"
"Testimony. At my appeal. Say I was acting under duress. That I was controlled by The Circle. That I'm a victim, not a perpetrator."
"You want me to lie for you?"
"I want you to save me. Like I saved you once."
"You never saved me."
"I saved you from Dad. From The Circle. I kept you out of it. I kept you safe."
"You killed Dad."
"I killed a traitor. There's a difference."
"He was our father."
"He was a liability." Victor's face twisted. "He was going to destroy everything. I did what I had to do."
"And now you want me to save you."
"I want us to be even. You help me, I leave you alone. Simple."
I looked at him. My brother. The killer. The monster.
"No."
"No?"
"I'm not helping you. I'm not lying for you. I'm not saving you."
His face changed. The mask dropped. The real Victor appeared.
"Then you're going to die."
He reached into his coat. Pulled out a gun.
But I was faster.
The gun in my purse was already in my hand. Already aimed.
"I don't think so."
He laughed. "You won't shoot me. You're too weak."
"Try me."
He raised his gun.
I fired.
