Chapter 9 - The Visitor

---
Three weeks later, a car pulled into my driveway.
Black. Tinted windows. No license plate.
I grabbed Leo. Pulled him into the basement. Locked the door.
"Stay here. Don't make a sound."
"Mommy—"
"Please, baby. Just stay here."
I went upstairs. Grabbed the gun I kept in the nightstand. Waited by the window.
The car door opened. A woman stepped out.
Tall. Blonde. Expensive suit. Confident.
She walked to my front door. Knocked.
I didn't answer.
She knocked again. "Maya. I know you're in there. I'm not here to hurt you."
I stayed silent.
"I'm here about your father. About the ledger. About the people he worked for."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"You do. And you're in danger. We all are."
"Who are you?"
"A friend. Or at least, I want to be."
She reached into her pocket. Pulled out something. Held it up to the window.
A photograph. Old. Faded.
My father. Young. Standing next to another man.
The other man was holding the same photograph. Same image. Different perspective.
"My name is Elena Vasquez. Your father worked for my father. And now... now someone is killing us. One by one."
I opened the door.
