Chapter 13 - The Last Evaluation

Domenico read Dr. Bell’s report with both hands flat on the boardroom table.

It described Isabella as paranoid.

Obsessive.

Delusional about family betrayal.

Unable to make complex legal decisions.

If the report was accepted, the amendment removing Cesare could be voided.

Nora looked at Carver.

“Did you know about this?”

“No.”

Cesare sat at the opposite end of the table.

“I did.”

Domenico looked at him.

“You had my wife evaluated without telling me?”

“She was unwell.”

“She was pregnant.”

“She was frightened.”

“Of you.”

Cesare’s expression remained calm.

“Isabella saw enemies everywhere.”

Maya opened the forensic file.

“Interesting.”

Cesare glanced at her.

“What?”

“The metadata on Dr. Bell’s evaluation says it was created eighteen months after the date printed on the report.”

Silence.

Cesare’s attorney leaned forward.

“That proves nothing. Files are scanned and recreated.”

Maya nodded.

“Correct. So we checked the letterhead.”

She projected two images.

“The report claims to be from Bell Family Psychiatry. That clinic changed its logo fourteen months after Isabella died.”

Cesare’s face finally moved.

Just a little.

Maya continued.

“The evaluation uses the new logo.”

One board member whispered, “My God.”

Cesare recovered quickly.

“You are relying on design trivia to make criminal accusations?”

“No,” Domenico said. “We’re relying on your archive room.”

He opened the evidence box.

Photographs of the hidden files moved down the table.

Children.

Widows.

Board members.

Medical records.

Trigger plans.

Payment schedules.

The room changed.

Not everyone was surprised.

Domenico noticed.

Two directors would not meet his eyes.

He pointed.

“You knew.”

One woman began to cry.

The other man stood.

“I knew there were family interventions. I didn’t know—”

“You knew enough to stay quiet.”

Cesare slammed his palm onto the table.

“Enough.”

Everybody stopped.

For the first time, his calm cracked.

“You think companies this size survive on feelings? Families destroy businesses every day. Addiction. Divorce. unstable heirs. Vindictive spouses. I created continuity.”

“You created leverage.”

“I created survival.”

“You put a five-year-old into a guardianship file.”

“She was never the target.”

Domenico stood.

“That is not the defense you think it is.”

The board secretary interrupted.

“We still have to address the proxy challenge.”

Nora looked at the forged evaluation.

“Then address it.”

Carver slid the original amendment page forward.

Maya supplied the forensic report.

Outside counsel supplied Isabella’s video.

The board voted to recognize Nora’s proxy provisionally pending court confirmation.

Cesare lost Ruby’s twenty-one percent.

The emergency suspension vote failed.

Six to five.

One abstention.

Cesare stared at Domenico.

“You think you won.”

“No.”

Domenico looked around the room.

“I think I found out what winning cost.”

He submitted his own motion.

Independent investigation.

Immediate suspension of every director linked to the hidden program.

Mandatory disclosure to affected families.

Referral of the forged records to authorities.

The board room erupted.

Domenico let it.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from Teresa.

COME HOME NOW.

RUBY FOUND SOMETHING IN THE DINING ROOM WALL.

Underneath was a photo.

Ruby was kneeling beside the broken bronze display from the night before.

Behind the fallen base, a second cavity had opened in the wall.

Inside was a stack of black ledgers.

And written across the first cover in Isabella’s handwriting were the words:

HARBOR POINT — WHO REALLY GETS PAID.
