Chapter 8 - Phase Two

“What was Phase One?”
Domenico asked the question in a conference room at his outside counsel’s office because he no longer trusted any room owned by his family.
Nobody answered immediately.
The new forensic accountant, Maya Chen, pulled up vendor records.
“Dr. Bell has received payments from Rinaldi subsidiaries for at least four years.”
“How many?”
“Twenty-three.”
“For Ruby?”
“No. Different families.”
Domenico looked at her.
“What families?”
“Executives. Board members. Trust beneficiaries. Mostly cases involving minors or elderly parents.”
The room went quiet.
Maya opened another spreadsheet.
“The payments are coded as leadership wellness consulting.”
Carver swore softly.
Domenico stared at the names.
People he knew.
People whose children had suddenly gone to boarding schools.
People who had resigned from boards during “family crises.”
A widow who had surrendered voting rights after a conservatorship hearing.
This was not one attempt to take Ruby.
It was a method.
A machine.
Domenico looked at Carver.
“You handled any of these?”
Carver’s face drained.
“Two.”
“You never noticed?”
“I saw documents. I didn’t see a pattern.”
“That’s what people say when the pattern benefits them.”
Carver flinched.
Good.
Domenico was done protecting people from discomfort.
Maya clicked another file.
“Phase One appears to be documentation. Phase Two is intervention.”
“Meaning?”
“Create incidents. Build a record. Trigger an evaluation. Then move the target into a legal structure where someone else controls decisions.”
Ruby had been five years old and already had a phase number.
Domenico stood and walked to the window.
For years, he had believed power meant nobody could take what was his.
Now he understood something uglier.
Power meant people could build paperwork around you until the cage looked legal.
His phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Domenico.”
Marcus’s voice was strained.
“Don’t hang up.”
“Where are you?”
“Not where they think.”
“Do you have the amendment?”
“Yes.”
“Bring it to me.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“You still think this is about a document.”
“It’s about my daughter.”
“No. Ruby was leverage. You were the target.”
Domenico turned from the window.
“What?”
“Cesare doesn’t want her money. He wants you off the board.”
“He can’t remove me.”
“He can if you’re under a family-protection order and your voting authority is suspended.”
Domenico remembered the forged records.
The staged fight.
The false marriage certificate.
Ruby’s evaluation.
“You were building a case that I was unstable.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because the company is voting on the Harbor Point sale next month.”
Domenico knew the deal.
A $1.8 billion sale of waterfront properties to a private consortium.
He had opposed it.
Cesare supported it.
“What’s wrong with Harbor Point?”
Marcus breathed heavily.
“Ask who owns the buyer.”
The call ended.
Maya searched corporate registries.
Layers of limited partnerships appeared.
Shells inside shells.
Then she stopped.
“Oh, no.”
Domenico looked at the screen.
The ultimate beneficial owner of the purchasing consortium was a family trust.
Not Cesare’s.
Valentina’s.
Domenico stared at the name.
VALENTINA ROSSI FAMILY HOLDINGS.
Everything he thought he understood about her motive had just changed again.
