Chapter 9 - Valentina’s Trust

Valentina stared at the ownership document for almost a full minute.
“That isn’t mine.”
Domenico had agreed to meet her in a monitored conference room with attorneys present.
“Your name is on it.”
“So was my name on half the garbage Cesare gave me.”
“You expect me to believe he put a billion-dollar acquisition vehicle in your name without telling you?”
“I expect you to believe he never planned to leave it there.”
Maya slid another document across the table.
“The trust was created two years before you met Domenico.”
Valentina looked up sharply.
Domenico saw real surprise.
Not the smooth kind she had performed in his house.
Real fear.
“When?”
Maya gave the date.
Valentina’s face changed.
“My father died that week.”
Nobody spoke.
She leaned back slowly.
“He left debt. That’s what we were told.”
Marcus had always been the one who handled their father’s papers.
Valentina rubbed her forehead.
“Cesare knew him.”
Domenico frowned.
“How?”
“My father worked private security for hotels. Years ago. He did contract work for Rinaldi properties.”
The conspiracy widened again.
Valentina laughed once, empty.
“So that’s why he found us.”
Domenico said nothing.
She looked at him.
“You think I moved into your house because I was hunting Ruby’s trust.”
“Were you?”
“At first? No.”
“And later?”
She looked down.
“Yes.”
The answer hurt more because she did not soften it.
“Cesare told me your family owed mine. He showed me documents saying my father had been cheated out of a partnership interest. He said if I helped him keep control long enough to complete Harbor Point, he would transfer what was ‘rightfully ours.’”
“The buyer.”
“Yes.”
“You believed him.”
“I wanted to.”
Domenico thought of the storage room.
“Wanting to believe him didn’t put Ruby there.”
“No.”
She met his eyes.
“I did that.”
Domenico looked away.
Maya’s phone rang.
She answered, listened, then turned the speaker on.
It was Mateo.
“We found Marcus.”
Valentina stood.
“Where?”
“St. Agnes emergency room.”
Her face went white.
“What happened?”
“Broken wrist. Concussion. Says he fell.”
Valentina whispered, “He didn’t fall.”
Mateo continued.
“He still has the original page.”
Domenico exhaled.
“And?”
“He wants immunity before he hands it over.”
Valentina laughed bitterly. “Of course he does.”
Domenico looked at her.
“Did he know the trust was in your name?”
“I don’t know.”
“You grew up together.”
“That doesn’t mean we told each other everything.”
A strange grief crossed her face.
“We learned early that secrets were the only things nobody could repossess.”
Domenico did not forgive her.
But for the first time, he understood the house she had built inside herself.
Then Maya received an email from the forensic team.
A recovered file from Isabella’s drive.
The subject line read: VALENTINA ROSSI.
The recording date was six years earlier.
Valentina stared at it.
“That’s impossible. I had never met Isabella.”
Domenico opened the video.
Isabella appeared on screen holding a personnel report.
“Cesare has begun using employees’ children and dependents as leverage,” she said. “One of the security contractors is Paolo Rossi. His daughter is Valentina. His son is Marcus.”
Valentina covered her mouth.
Isabella continued.
“If Paolo is right, Cesare has been moving assets into their names without consent. They may eventually look guilty for transactions they never understood.”
Valentina’s eyes filled.
Domenico stared at the screen.
The woman Valentina had spent months helping Cesare erase had tried to protect her years before they ever met.
