Chapter 15 - The Story They Planned to Tell

At 7:35 the next morning, Domenico sat in a small conference room at a downtown law office while his public-relations director, Helen Ward, stared at the draft press release on the table.
“I didn’t write this.”
“The metadata says your account did.”
“My account has been mirrored for years. Cesare insisted on emergency access after the merger.”
Domenico looked at Maya.
She nodded. “That’s plausible. We found delegated permissions.”
Helen leaned forward.
“But I did know something was coming.”
Domenico’s face hardened.
“What?”
“Cesare asked me six months ago how the press would react to a custody scandal involving you.”
“And you didn’t tell me.”
“I thought it was hypothetical.”
“You thought wrong.”
She looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
Domenico was beginning to understand how systems like Cesare’s survived.
Not because everybody was evil.
Because too many people decided the strange thing they saw was probably somebody else’s problem.
At 7:58, instead of trying to stop the release quietly, Domenico published something first.
A statement from himself.
Short.
Direct.
He acknowledged the incident with Marcus.
He did not excuse hitting him.
He stated that evidence suggested the confrontation had been provoked as part of a larger guardianship scheme.
He confirmed an independent investigation.
He confirmed that child-welfare authorities had been contacted.
And he said one sentence his attorneys initially hated.
“My daughter should never have needed to become brave inside her own home.”
At 8:00, Cesare’s press release landed.
It looked different now.
Not like an exposé.
Like retaliation.
By noon, two families from the hidden archive had contacted Domenico’s attorneys.
By three, there were five.
By evening, nine.
The company’s stock fell.
Two lenders froze discussions.
A major hotel partner demanded an audit.
Domenico watched millions disappear from a screen and felt strangely calm.
Mateo entered his office.
“Cesare resigned.”
“From the board?”
“Effective immediately.”
Domenico did not celebrate.
“Where is he?”
“His attorney says he’s cooperating through counsel.”
“Good.”
“And Marcus?”
“Still cooperating. He turned over three storage keys and a phone.”
“Valentina?”
“Same.”
Domenico looked at Ruby’s drawing taped beside his desk.
A house.
Three windows.
A huge sun.
Nobody locked in any room.
That night, Ruby sat beside him at the dining table.
Not at the far end.
Beside him.
Her gold chair was gone.
“Where is it?” she asked.
“In the workshop.”
“Did it break?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
Domenico smiled faintly.
“Because I think you should choose your own chair.”
Ruby considered that with great seriousness.
“Can it be purple?”
“It can be purple.”
“With stars?”
“Absolutely not.”
She gasped.
He waited.
Then smiled.
“Yes. With stars.”
Ruby laughed.
The sound filled the room Valentina had once tried to make quiet.
Teresa entered holding a folder.
“This came from Nora.”
Domenico opened it.
Court confirmation.
Nora Hale’s appointment as trust protector was recognized.
The forged marriage certificate was void.
The emergency guardianship filing was dismissed.
Ruby’s proxy shares were frozen from family interference pending full review.
Domenico exhaled.
For the first time in days, one answer did not create a worse question.
It created space.
Then Ruby pointed toward the folder.
“Is that about me?”
“Partly.”
“Am I in trouble?”
Domenico closed it.
“No.”
“Are you?”
He thought about the company.
The investigators.
The families calling.
The years it would take to repair what had happened under the Rinaldi name.
“Probably.”
Ruby nodded.
“Okay.”
“That’s all?”
She picked up her fork.
“You said grown-up problems aren’t my job.”
Domenico laughed.
She had him there.
Later, after Ruby went to bed, he walked through the old nursery.
The walls were still open.
Wires exposed.
Steel boxes empty.
Hidden systems dragged into the light.
Mateo asked, “Want me to close it all up?”
Domenico looked at the cavities Isabella had used because she did not trust the people around her.
“Yes.”
“Same walls?”
“No.”
Domenico looked toward Ruby’s room.
“No more hidden spaces.”
