Chapter 4 - The Vote I Never Had

“Explain.”

Domenico’s voice had gone flat.

Carver opened another file.

“When Isabella died, her trust became irrevocable. You remained Ruby’s natural guardian, but the trust document separated custody from voting authority.”

“Why?”

“Isabella insisted.”

That hurt more than Domenico expected.

“She didn’t trust me?”

Carver shook his head. “She didn’t trust the family.”

Marcus’s expression changed at that.

Domenico caught it.

Carver continued.

“The proxy remained with an independent trust protector until Ruby turned ten. After that, it was supposed to transfer to you unless there was an active protective proceeding.”

“Who is the trust protector?”

Carver hesitated.

“Your uncle Cesare.”

Domenico stepped back.

Cesare Rinaldi.

His father’s younger brother.

The man who had taught him to negotiate.

The man who had held Ruby at Isabella’s funeral while Domenico signed paperwork he barely remembered reading.

“No.”

Carver looked down.

“Temporary appointment. It was supposed to last six months.”

“It’s been three years.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“Because the replacement amendment disappeared.”

Domenico stared at him.

Valentina spoke for the first time in several minutes.

“Now you understand why this is bigger than me.”

He turned on her.

“No. You don’t get to use a bigger criminal to make yourself smaller.”

Her face tightened.

“I didn’t say I was innocent.”

“You sent my daughter to a storage room.”

“I needed access to the wall.”

The admission changed the room.

Domenico took one step forward.

“What was behind it?”

Valentina glanced toward the ceiling as if she could see through floors.

“Isabella’s backup.”

Mateo looked at the drive.

“This?”

“Part of it.”

“How did you know?” Domenico asked.

Valentina gave him a tired smile.

“Because Cesare told us.”

Marcus snapped, “Val.”

“Shut up, Marcus.”

Her brother stared at her.

She looked at Domenico.

“Your uncle has spent three years trying to find a second trust amendment Isabella drafted before she died. He believed she hid it in the house.”

Domenico’s chest tightened.

“What amendment?”

“One removing him as trust protector.”

Carver whispered, “That would explain why the original never reached my office.”

Valentina laughed without humor.

“You really think your office was the only place he had people?”

Carver looked away.

Domenico thought of Isabella during the final year of her life.

She had been anxious.

Not afraid exactly.

Watchful.

She changed passwords.

Stopped discussing business at dinner.

Once, she asked Domenico whether he believed family loyalty should have limits.

He had answered too quickly.

Family is family.

She had looked disappointed.

He remembered that now.

“Why the hidden recorder?”

Valentina’s gaze moved to Marcus.

He swore.

She said, “Cesare wanted evidence. If Ruby looked unstable and you looked violent, he could keep the proxy under the protective clause. If I became guardian, I would vote the shares the way he wanted.”

“And what did you get?”

Her eyes flashed.

“Security.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“My mother is in assisted living. Marcus and I have been paying for it for years. Cesare covered the debt.”

Marcus slammed a fist onto the arm of the sofa.

“She doesn’t owe you an explanation.”

Valentina turned on him.

“I owe Ruby one.”

The words silenced everyone.

Domenico studied her.

“You hurt her.”

Valentina swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Because Cesare told you to?”

Her answer took too long.

“No.”

It was the first honest thing she had said all night.

Domenico looked away.

Mateo was still scrolling through the drive.

“Boss.”

“What?”

“I found a video folder dated before Valentina moved in.”

Domenico went still.

“How far back?”

“Four years.”

Isabella had been alive then.

Mateo opened the oldest file.

The camera angle showed the old nursery.

Isabella stood near the wall, visibly pregnant, holding a small black drive.

She looked directly into the hidden camera.

“If Domenico is watching this,” she said, “then somebody failed to give him the amendment.”

Domenico stopped breathing.

Isabella continued.

“And if Cesare still controls Ruby’s shares, do not confront him alone. He has been building a case against you since before our daughter was born.”
