Chapter 6 - Isabella’s Backup

Ruby was released before noon.

Not because Hartwell suddenly became cooperative.

Because the county investigator requested the original admission authority and the center could not produce a verified court order.

When Ruby came through the double doors, she ran so hard one shoe came loose.

Domenico dropped to his knees and caught her.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

“For what?”

“For not seeing it sooner.”

Ruby pulled back.

“Did I do something bad?”

“No.”

“Valentina says grown-ups only take kids away when kids are bad.”

Domenico closed his eyes.

“No one should have told you that.”

Back at the estate, Ruby refused to enter her old room.

So Domenico let her sleep in the library with a blanket fort and every stuffed animal she could carry.

Then he went back to Isabella’s recording.

Mateo had recovered twelve intact files.

In one, Isabella sat at the edge of the nursery window.

“If you found this, the paper copy may still be inside the house,” she said. “I stopped trusting the office after two board memos were altered. I created a local backup because anything connected to the company network could be changed.”

She looked exhausted.

“But listen carefully, Dom. Cesare does not need to steal the company. He only needs to make sure nobody can outvote him.”

Domenico stared at the screen.

Isabella had never talked to him like this while she was alive.

Or maybe she had tried.

Maybe he had always been too busy defending his family to hear her.

The next clip showed a handwritten list.

Carver.

Cesare.

Hartwell.

Child Harbor Foundation.

And one name Domenico did not recognize.

Dr. Nolan Bell.

His attorney searched the name.

“He’s a private child evaluator.”

Mateo looked at the hidden-drive files.

“The petition on Ruby cites Bell.”

Domenico felt sick.

A third video started.

Isabella held a sealed envelope.

“The amendment removes Cesare as trust protector and appoints an independent fiduciary until Ruby is twenty-one. I signed it with two witnesses. One copy went to counsel. One went into the house.”

Carver whispered, “I never saw it.”

“Then somebody intercepted it.”

The recording continued.

“I hid the house copy where Ruby would eventually find it if nobody else did.”

Domenico leaned forward.

Isabella smiled faintly.

“She always kicks the underside of that ridiculous gold chair.”

Everybody looked toward the breakfast room.

The chair.

The same chair Valentina had placed at the far end of the table.

The same chair that had been moved from the nursery wall.

Domenico turned it over.

Beneath the seat was a thin brass plate.

Mateo removed four screws.

Inside the hollow frame was a tiny key and a folded card in Isabella’s handwriting.

WALL SAFE. WEST NURSERY. SECOND PANEL.

They returned to the nursery.

Two feet from the first recorder, another section of wood paneling lifted away.

The key opened a narrow steel box.

Inside sat a sealed legal envelope.

Carver’s face changed when he saw the wax mark.

“That’s Isabella’s private seal.”

Domenico reached for it.

Then Mateo caught his arm.

“Don’t.”

Domenico looked at him.

Mateo pointed inside the safe.

The envelope was there.

But so was a recent fingerprint powder mark.

Someone had already opened the box.

And returned the envelope afterward.

Domenico’s lawyer examined the seal.

“This was resealed.”

Domenico’s stomach tightened.

The document they had spent three years looking for had finally been found.

But somebody had reached it first.

And now there was no reason to assume the pages inside were the pages Isabella had hidden.
