Chapter 5 - The Empty Chair

By sunrise, Valentina and Marcus were gone from the main house.

Not free.

Domenico had turned the documents over to outside counsel and instructed security to preserve every recording. His attorney warned him not to make dramatic moves that could be twisted into another claim of instability.

For the first time in his life, restraint felt like a weapon.

He slept for forty minutes on the sofa outside Ruby’s room.

When he woke, the door was open.

The bed was empty.

“Ruby?”

No answer.

He stood too fast.

“Ruby!”

Teresa appeared at the far end of the hall, pale.

“She was with me ten minutes ago.”

Domenico ran downstairs.

The breakfast room was set for three.

His chair.

Valentina’s chair.

Ruby’s little gold chair.

Empty.

On the plate was a folded sheet of paper.

Domenico opened it.

TEMPORARY THERAPEUTIC TRANSPORT AUTHORIZATION.

His forged signature appeared at the bottom.

Teresa covered her mouth.

“No.”

Domenico called Mateo.

“Find the car.”

“Already on it.”

“Who took her?”

“One of the outside drivers. He showed a signed transport order and a court cover sheet.”

“There is no court order.”

“I know that now.”

Domenico looked at the empty chair.

Under the seat, something blue caught his eye.

A crayon mark.

Ruby had drawn a tiny bird beneath the chair cushion.

Three blue lines beneath it.

Teresa whispered, “She does that when she wants to remember a place.”

Domenico looked up.

“What place?”

“She calls the therapy office the blue-bird room.”

He was already moving.

Hartwell Children’s Center sat forty minutes north of the estate behind white gates and carefully trimmed hedges.

The building looked less like a hospital than a private school for rich families who wanted problems handled quietly.

Domenico entered with two attorneys, Mateo, and a county child-welfare investigator his new counsel had contacted after seeing the forged documents.

The receptionist smiled.

“Can I help you?”

“My daughter was brought here without my consent.”

Her smile vanished.

“Name?”

“Ruby Rinaldi.”

She typed.

Then stopped.

“I need to call the director.”

“No. You need to tell me where my child is.”

His attorney touched his arm.

“Let us handle the language.”

Domenico forced himself to step back.

The director arrived with a woman in a gray suit.

“Mr. Rinaldi, Ruby is safe.”

“Then bring her to me.”

“There is an active evaluation hold.”

“Based on forged paperwork.”

The woman in gray spoke. “The admitting guardian provided sufficient authority.”

“What guardian?”

She looked at her file.

“Valentina Rinaldi.”

Domenico’s lawyer snapped, “There is no Valentina Rinaldi. They are not married.”

The director’s face changed.

He turned the folder around.

A notarized marriage certificate sat on top.

Domenico stared at it.

The document said he and Valentina had been legally married in Nevada five months earlier.

His signature was at the bottom.

He had never been to Nevada with her.

Then the child-welfare investigator whispered, “This isn’t just a guardianship fraud anymore.”

Domenico looked toward the locked hallway where his daughter was being held.

The empty chair at breakfast had not only told him Ruby was gone.

It had revealed that someone had built an entire legal life around him without his knowledge.
