Chapter 40 - The Gate Above the Mountain
We had misunderstood the prison.
Again.
The First Defier had created a sanctuary outside Heaven's control.
Then Heaven sealed the route.
The system wanted hosts to reopen it.
Not because he was trapped.
Because the system wanted to return home.
Fen sat down hard when we told him.
"Then the interface isn't Heaven's tool."
"Not originally," I said.
It had been rebel technology captured, modified, then sent back through cultivators.
A weapon with too many owners.
Before we could decide what that meant, the sky split.
A golden gate appeared above Iron Lotus.
Not the red gate below.
A true Heaven Gate.
White-armored cultivators descended.
Golden Court soldiers knelt instantly.
Even Lord Sen bowed his head.
Fen whispered, "Ascended enforcers."
Their leader looked down at me.
[Heaven Audit]
[Target: Kai Renn]
[Violation count: 1,204]
I grinned.
"That's higher than I expected."
The enforcer raised a spear.
"Kai Renn. You are ordered to ascend for judgment."
Jace stepped beside me.
Mira joined him.
Lyra, surprisingly, did too.
The enforcer looked at them.
"Interference will be punished."
Mira shrugged.
"We've had a busy month."
The Heaven Gate widened.
Behind the enforcer stood an entire city in the clouds.

And every citizen had a system window floating beside their head.
