Chapter 41 - The City Under Siege
We did not ascend.
Heaven descended instead.
The cloud city anchored above Iron Lotus and began projecting laws downward.
No unauthorized cultivation.
No forbidden roots.
No unsanctioned beasts.
Pebble received six violations in one minute.
He seemed proud.
Blackwater City came under audit too.
Cultivators with irregular techniques lost access to qi.
Shops closed.
Formations died.
People panicked.
Heaven did not need to destroy cities.
It could simply revoke permission.
That made me angrier than lightning ever had.
Jace used sect authority to shelter refugees.
Mira extended my No Rank field through Void Lotus channels.
For a few blocks, people could cultivate again.
They called it the Free Zone.
I hated the name.
Rook sold shirts.
I hated that more.
The ascended enforcer returned with an offer.
"Complete one sanctioned quest. Your violations will be forgiven."
A blue panel appeared.
[HEAVEN QUEST]
[Kill Lyra Renn.]
[Reward: Ascension + all debts erased.]
Lyra read my face.
"Do it."
"No."
"You don't even like me."
"True."
"Then why?"
I looked at the quest.
"Because I want to know why Heaven is afraid of you."
The enforcer smiled.
"Excellent question."

Then he stabbed Lyra through the heart.
