Chapter 42 - The One Quest I Should Fail
Lyra fell.
The enforcer pulled his spear free.
I caught her.
Her blood was black.
Not red.
Lock-fragment black.
Fen stared.
"Mara gave Lyra a fragment too."
Two children.
Two keys.
The system had told me my root was "not mine."
It had never said I was the only carrier.
The enforcer raised his spear again.
I activated No Rank.
One breath outside evaluation.
His spear passed through where Heaven predicted I would be.
I broke his wrist.
Mira opened Void Lotus.
Jace attacked from the other side.
We drove the enforcer back.
Lyra gasped.
Still alive.
Her fragment had moved around the wound like liquid armor.
The Heaven quest updated.
[Kill Lyra Renn — 0/1]
[Bonus for immediate completion: Divine Core]
I deleted the quest.
Not declined.
Deleted.
The system shook.
[USER PERMISSION ERROR]
Pebble chirped and bit the corner of the panel.
Together we tore it apart.
[Quest object destroyed.]
The enforcer's face changed.
"That should be impossible."
I smiled.
"I hear that a lot."
Then every quest window above the city flickered.
One by one, other cultivators noticed.
A woman in the crowd reached toward hers.
And closed it.
Heaven's control weakened for half a second.

That was enough to start a revolution.
