Chapter 1 - The Name on Her Phone

The phone in Margaret's pocket began to ring, and the name on the screen made Daniel forget how to breathe.
DR. KELLER.
His family doctor had delivered him thirty-four years ago. He had signed his father's death certificate. And now, at nearly midnight, he was calling the woman who had just attacked Daniel's wife beside their newborn.
Margaret lunged for the phone.
Daniel got there first.
"Give it to me!" she snapped.
He held it away from her. "Why is Dr. Keller calling you?"
"Because unlike your wife, some people still care whether I'm alive."
Emily was curled on the carpet, one arm over her head, the other reaching blindly toward the crib. Daniel knelt beside her.
"Em. Look at me."
Her eyes found his. "Mia?"
"She's here. She's okay."
The baby screamed harder, tiny fists punching the air. Daniel lifted her out, tucked her against his chest, then called 911 with his free hand.
Margaret's face changed.
Not fear. Calculation.
"Daniel," she said quietly, "before you destroy this family, ask Emily what she took from the crib."
Emily went still.
Daniel looked down at her. "What is she talking about?"
"Don't." Emily's voice cracked. "Not now."
Margaret smiled, and Daniel hated that smile more than the screaming.
Sirens cut through the neighborhood within minutes. Two officers rushed in. A third separated Margaret from the family while paramedics checked Emily's pupils and the swelling along her scalp.
"She attacked me first," Margaret announced. "My daughter-in-law is unstable. She hasn't slept in weeks. Ask anyone."
Emily tried to stand. Her knees folded.
Daniel caught her.
"You put your hands on her in front of my child," he said.
"Your child?" Margaret replied. "Are you sure?"
Daniel took one step toward her before an officer raised a hand.
"Sir. Stay with your wife."
Margaret was cuffed. Even then, she kept her eyes on Emily.
As an officer emptied Margaret's pockets onto the hallway table, her phone lit up again. This time it was not a call. It was a text preview from Dr. Keller.
Daniel read it before the screen went dark.
DESTROY THE CRIB BEFORE POLICE SEARCH IT.
His stomach dropped.
He looked at the oak crib his father had built by hand more than thirty years ago, restored for Mia before she was born.
One of the lower rails was slightly crooked.
Emily saw where he was looking.
"Daniel," she whispered.
He turned.
Tears slid down her face, but the fear in her eyes was no longer about Margaret.
"Don't touch that crib," she said. "Not until I tell you what I found inside it."
