Chapter 10 - Someone Had Been Drugging the House

CPS arrived with a supervisor and a pediatric specialist.
Emily handed over every medication in the diaper bag. Daniel handed over the formula, the bottles, and the vitamin drops from home.
"We do not sedate our baby," Emily said, voice shaking with fury. "We don't even give her anything without asking the pediatrician."
The specialist remained calm. "Then we find the source."
The answer came from the formula container.
A lab swab found residue of a prescription benzodiazepine around the inner rim.
"This can make an infant dangerously sleepy," the specialist said. "At the detected level, it appears there were repeated small exposures, not one large dose."
Daniel felt rage crawl up his spine.
"Who had access to the formula?"
Emily laughed once, bitterly. "Everyone your mother insisted should help me."
Margaret had come almost every day after Mia was born. She brought meals. Folded laundry. Prepared bottles while criticizing Emily for being tired.
You're so scattered lately.
You need rest.
Maybe motherhood is harder for you than you expected.
Emily suddenly gripped the edge of the table.
"The vitamins."
"What?" Daniel asked.
"Your mother brought me postpartum vitamins from Keller's office. She said they were better than the store ones."
Ortiz sent them for testing.
The capsules contained vitamins.
And a mild sedative.
Daniel went completely still.
Emily's voice broke. "She was drugging me too."
The pattern became obvious and ugly.
Make the baby unusually sleepy. Make the mother exhausted, foggy, emotional. Keep showing up as the helpful grandmother. Build a story before anyone realizes there is a story being built.
CPS did not remove Mia. Instead, the agency documented the evidence and placed the family on a temporary safety plan with no unsupervised visitors.
Margaret's lawyer called the accusations "wild retaliation."
Then Dr. Keller's clinic was searched.
Daniel and Ortiz watched from the sidewalk as officers carried out boxes of patient records.
One detective emerged holding a white lab coat in an evidence bag.
There was dried blood on the sleeve.
Keller was nowhere inside.
His office computer had been smashed.
The back door camera, however, still worked.
Footage showed Keller leaving at 4:18 a.m. with Evan Pike.
Keller did not look like a willing passenger.
Daniel's phone rang from a blocked number.
Ortiz signaled him to put it on speaker.
Keller's voice came through, barely audible.
"Daniel. Listen to me. I did terrible things. But your father begged me to save him."
Daniel swallowed. "Where are you?"
"Evan is-"
A thud interrupted him.
Keller gasped.
"Your mother paid me to keep Thomas quiet after the crash. I thought she meant sedate him. I didn't know-"
A man's voice shouted in the background.
Then Keller screamed one word.
"WAREHOUSE!"
A gunshot cracked through the line.
The call ended.
