Chapter 8 - The Box at the Bank

The brass key opened Safe-Deposit Box 417 at First County Bank.
Ortiz arranged a warrant before noon.
Daniel, Emily, and Claire stood behind the detective as the bank manager slid the long metal box onto a private room table.
Inside were no jewels.
Only paper.
Stacks of bank statements. Copies of checks. A prescription bottle with no pharmacy label. A cassette tape sealed in plastic. And a yellow envelope with Daniel's name on it.
His hands shook as he opened it.
Son,
If this box has been opened because I am gone, then I waited too long.
Daniel stopped.
Emily touched his wrist.
He kept reading.
I believed I could repair the company quietly. I was wrong. Margaret used North Lake Risk Group to move money, pay Evan, and keep Keller loyal. Site 14 was not just an accident. Michael Carter was injured after official working hours. He was alive when Margaret arrived. An ambulance was never called.
Emily made a sound like she had been struck.
Daniel read faster.
I do not know who was driving the truck. Margaret told me it was Daniel. Keller told me Daniel remembered nothing. The front grille was replaced before I saw it. I began to doubt everything.
Daniel dropped the page.
"She told Dad it was me."
Claire whispered, "Maybe it was."
Emily's face twisted. "He was seventeen. And my father was alive. They could have called for help."
Ortiz opened the prescription bottle with gloved hands. "We'll test these."
The cassette tape was labeled KELLER - FINAL.
The bank manager brought an old player from storage.
Thomas's voice filled the room.
"Robert, I need you to say it clearly. Was Daniel driving?"
Keller answered, nervous and breathless.
"Margaret told me not to ask."
"You treated him."
"He had a concussion. Alcohol in his blood. He kept saying he was in the passenger seat."
Daniel's knees nearly gave out.
Thomas: "Passenger seat?"
Keller: "That's what he said before she arrived. After Margaret came in, she told him he had been driving. He started repeating it."
Claire covered her mouth.
Daniel whispered, "She put it in my head."
The tape continued.
Thomas: "Then who was driving?"
Keller went silent.
Thomas: "Robert. Who was driving?"
A door slammed somewhere on the recording.
Keller's frightened voice dropped to a whisper.
"Evan."
The tape ended.
Emily sat frozen.
Ortiz exhaled slowly. "That changes a lot."
Daniel should have felt relief.
He did not.
Because beneath the cassette lay one last item: a photograph of Site 14 taken at night.
Three people stood beside a company truck.
Margaret.
Evan.
And a fourth figure in the shadows, wearing a white medical coat.
Dr. Keller.
On the back, Thomas had written one sentence.
Michael Carter did not die at Site 14.
