Chapter 18 - The Brother Was Alive

The man in the second photograph was seventeen.

Dark hair. Gray eyes. Daniel's jaw.

His name was Benjamin Cole.

He lived in Arizona with the same woman from the toddler photo, a retired pediatric nurse named Susan Cole.

Margaret had paid Susan every month through North Lake Risk Group.

"He thinks Susan is his mother," Ortiz said. "His birth records were sealed through a private adoption. We are working on how that happened."

Daniel stared at the photo.

"Does he know about any of us?"

"Probably not."

"Don't contact him yet," Emily said.

Daniel looked at her.

"This is a seventeen-year-old kid whose entire identity may be about to explode. He deserves more care than your mother gave him."

Daniel nodded slowly.

Even in pain, Emily was thinking about the child first.

He reached for her hand.

This time, she held on.

Evan came out of surgery alive.

Facing kidnapping, arson, obstruction, assault, and possible homicide charges, he started talking.

He confirmed the affair. The baby. The secret adoption. The truck crash. Michael Carter's death.

Then he gave Ortiz the location of Michael's remains.

The old quarry.

Emily did not go to the recovery site.

She waited at home with Daniel and Mia while Ortiz called near midnight.

"We found human remains," the detective said. "We need DNA confirmation, but we also found Michael Carter's wedding ring."

Emily folded over in Daniel's arms and sobbed.

For years, she had lived with a grave containing a closed casket and a report that never made sense.

Now she finally knew where her father had been left.

But closure did not come cleanly.

Nothing in this family came cleanly.

The next morning, Margaret's attorney requested emergency medical release after Margaret complained of chest pain in custody.

She was taken to the same hospital where Keller was recovering.

At 10:14 a.m., a fire alarm triggered on the fourth floor.

At 10:17, Keller's guard found his room empty.

At 10:21, Margaret's guard found a nurse unconscious in a supply room and Margaret gone.

Hospital cameras showed Margaret and Keller leaving through a service elevator together.

Daniel stared at the footage on Ortiz's phone.

"Keller helped her escape?"

Ortiz shook her head. "Look closer."

Keller was walking in front of Margaret.

A dark object pressed against his back beneath her coat.

A gun.

Then Daniel's phone buzzed.

A message from Margaret.

I HAVE THE ORIGINAL DRIVE. THOMAS LEFT ONE FINAL RECORDING. COME TO THE LAKE HOUSE ALONE IF YOU WANT EMILY TO KNOW WHO REALLY ORDERED MICHAEL'S DEATH.

A second message followed.

NO POLICE. NO CLAIRE. NO EMILY.

Then a photo loaded.

Keller was tied to a chair in the old lake house kitchen.

Behind him, flames were already licking up the curtains.
