Chapter 19 - The House Was Already Burning

Daniel did not go alone.
He just made Margaret think he did.
Ortiz's team approached through the woods while Daniel drove straight up the lake road in his own truck.
Emily stayed in an unmarked command vehicle beyond the ridge.
"I hate this," she told Ortiz.
"So do I."
"If he gets hurt-"
"We pull him out."
Daniel entered the lake house through the front door.
Smoke rolled along the ceiling.
Keller sat tied to the same kitchen chair where Michael Carter had once been filmed begging for help.
Margaret stood behind him with a pistol in one hand and the original flash drive in the other.
"Close the door," she said.
Daniel did.
"Where's the final recording?"
"You always were impatient."
"The house is on fire."
"Then listen quickly."
She plugged the drive into an old laptop on the counter and opened an audio file.
Thomas's voice played.
"Margaret, I know Evan hit Michael. I know you stopped Keller from calling an ambulance. But I also know the order to move Michael did not come from Evan. It came from you."
Margaret's younger voice answered.
"He had the ledger."
"So you let him die."
"I told Keller to keep him stable."
"You told Evan to move him before dawn."
"Because police were coming."
Thomas shouted, "You chose the company over a human life!"
The recording ended.
Daniel stared at his mother.
"That's it? We already know this."
Margaret smiled sadly.
"No. That is what Thomas believed."
She clicked another file.
Evan's voice.
"Michael was going to give the ledger to Thomas. You said scare him, not hit him."
A man's voice answered.
Not Margaret.
Not Keller.
Daniel recognized it anyway.
His uncle Richard Hayes, Thomas's older brother and co-founder of Hayes Construction.
Richard had died three years ago after a stroke.
"If Carter talks," Richard said, "the contracts are gone. The inspectors open every site. Handle it."
Evan asked, "And Margaret?"
Richard laughed. "She'll do what she always does. Protect the name."
Daniel felt sick.
The crime had started wider than his mother.
Margaret lifted the gun.
"Thomas wanted to expose Richard too. That's why your father died."
"You killed Dad."
"I tried to stop Richard from touching him."
"Then why hide the evidence?"
"Because Thomas planned to burn everything down. Company. Family. All of it."
Keller coughed through the smoke.
A ceiling beam cracked.
Daniel took one step toward him.
Margaret pointed the gun at Daniel.
"Don't."
"Mom. Put it down."
"You chose her."
"I chose my wife and child because you were hurting them."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"After everything I did for you."
Daniel's voice became quiet.
"That is the lie you tell yourself so you never have to admit what you did to us."
A window shattered behind Margaret.
She turned.
Daniel lunged.
