Chapter 11 - The Warehouse With the Locked Freezer

The old Hayes warehouse sat twelve miles outside town, half abandoned and surrounded by chain-link fence.
Ortiz called tactical officers. Daniel was ordered to stay behind the perimeter.
He lasted four minutes.
When the first team entered through the loading dock, he moved along the side fence with Claire.
"This is stupid," Claire whispered.
"Then go back."
"I'm not leaving you."
A crash came from inside.
Then two shots.
Daniel found an unlocked service door and pulled it open.
Claire grabbed his sleeve. "Ortiz is going to kill you."
"Get in line."
The warehouse smelled like dust, oil, and cold metal. Voices echoed from the far end.
Daniel followed a trail of blood drops behind stacked pallets.
They found Keller tied to a chair inside an old packing room, bleeding from the shoulder but alive.
"Daniel?" Keller blinked at him in disbelief. "You shouldn't be here."
"Where's Evan?"
"Gone. Back exit."
Claire cut the rope around Keller's wrists with a box cutter.
Keller grabbed Daniel's shirt.
"Listen. Site 14. Your father found the second ledger. That's what started everything."
"What ledger?"
"Payments. Injuries. Inspectors. People Margaret and Evan paid to keep the company clean on paper. Michael Carter found out."
Emily's father.
Daniel leaned closer. "How did Michael die?"
Keller's eyes filled with tears.
"He was hit by the truck. Evan was driving. Michael was alive. He had broken ribs, internal bleeding, but he was talking. He kept asking me to call an ambulance."
"And you didn't."
Keller shook his head, ashamed.
"Margaret said an ambulance would bring police. Police would test Evan. They would find the illegal night crew. The fake safety records. Everything. She told me to stabilize Michael until they decided what to do."
Daniel's voice turned flat. "What did they decide?"
Keller looked at Claire.
"They moved him."
"Where?"
Before Keller answered, the warehouse lights died.
A metal door slammed somewhere in the dark.
Claire whispered, "Daniel."
A forklift engine roared to life.
Headlights burst on at the end of the aisle.
The machine came straight at them.
Daniel shoved Claire and Keller through the packing-room doorway as the forklift tore into the pallets, sending boxes and lumber crashing across the floor.
Ortiz shouted from the far side.
"Police! Stop!"
The driver jumped from the moving machine and disappeared through a side exit.
Daniel saw the face for less than a second.
Not Evan.
Margaret.
They ran outside, but her car was already tearing down the service road.
Keller sagged against the wall.
Ortiz cuffed him to the ambulance stretcher before paramedics loaded him.
"One last question," she said. "Where did they move Michael Carter?"
Keller looked at Emily, who had arrived behind the police line with Mia and a CPS-approved family advocate.
His answer broke her.
"To the lake house. He was still alive when we got there."
