Chapter 12 - Her Father Begged for an Ambulance

The Hayes lake house had been sold six years earlier.

Ortiz obtained the old property records and found something worse: the buyer was North Lake Risk Group.

The shell company still owned it.

Police entered before sunset.

Daniel, Emily, and Claire waited outside the gate while evidence teams searched the property.

Emily stared at the dark windows.

"My dad was in there."

Daniel took her hand.

She let him hold it, but her fingers did not close around his.

Keller's formal statement arrived by secure video from the hospital.

He admitted everything he claimed to remember.

Michael Carter had been brought into the kitchen, conscious and in severe pain. Keller gave him medication, but Michael's condition worsened. He begged for an ambulance.

Margaret refused.

"She said the family could not survive a public investigation," Keller told Ortiz. "She kept saying Daniel would go to prison. I believed her when she said he had been driving."

"When did Michael die?"

Keller covered his face. "Around two in the morning."

Emily left the room.

Daniel followed her to the porch.

She spun on him.

"Don't tell me you're sorry."

He stopped.

"I can't hear that right now."

"Okay."

"My father was asking for help less than an hour from a hospital. She let him die so she could protect a lie."

"I know."

"And your father knew."

Daniel's eyes dropped.

"He found out later."

"Later was still years before he died. He had time."

That hit because it was true.

Before Daniel could answer, Ortiz came outside.

"We found something."

Behind the lake house, beneath a rotting storage shed, workers uncovered a sealed metal trunk.

Inside were Michael Carter's wallet, work badge, broken watch, and the bloodstained shirt he had been wearing.

Emily sank to her knees.

But there was no body.

There was also a small handheld video camera wrapped in plastic.

The battery was dead, the casing damaged, but the memory unit appeared intact.

"Why would they keep this?" Daniel asked.

Ortiz looked toward the house. "Because people who believe they control everything sometimes keep proof as insurance against each other."

The camera was sent to digital forensics.

Two hours later, a technician recovered forty-three seconds of video.

The image shook violently.

Michael Carter's face appeared, bruised and pale, propped against the kitchen cabinets.

Someone off camera said, "Tell me where the ledger is."

Margaret's voice.

Michael whispered, "Go to hell."

Then another voice entered the room.

Thomas Hayes.

Daniel leaned toward the screen.

His father sounded horrified.

"What have you done?"

The video cut to black.

Emily turned to Daniel.

"Your father was at the lake house that night."

And suddenly the old story that Thomas learned the truth years later collapsed.
