Chapter 2 - His Father Built a Hiding Place

By sunrise, the nursery was sealed with police tape.
Daniel sat beside Emily in the emergency room while Mia slept in a clear plastic hospital bassinet between them. A CT scan showed no skull fracture, but Emily had a concussion, bruising along her neck, and a split at her hairline.
Detective Lena Ortiz stood at the foot of the bed with a notebook closed in her hand.
"You said you found something in the crib three days ago," she said.
Emily stared at Daniel.
"I was going to tell you."
"Tell me now."
She swallowed. "The lower rail was loose. I thought it was from when we moved it upstairs. When I pulled it forward, there was a hollow space behind the panel."
"What was inside?"
"A flash drive. A brass key. And a note from your dad."
Daniel's face emptied.
Thomas Hayes had been dead for eight years.
"You found a note from my father and said nothing?"
"Because the first line said, 'If Margaret ever threatens your family, do not confront her alone.'"
Ortiz leaned forward. "Do you still have the items?"
Emily hesitated.
That was answer enough.
"Where?" Daniel asked.
"The key is hidden. I copied the drive. The original was in the crib until tonight. When your mother came in, she kept asking where it was. She thought I still had it."
Daniel closed his eyes for one second. "That's why she attacked you."
"I think so."
"What was on the drive?"
Emily reached into the overnight bag a nurse had brought from triage and pulled out a small silver laptop.
"I only opened one file."
She clicked an audio recording dated nine years earlier.
Static filled the tiny room.
Then Daniel heard his father's voice.
"Margaret, put the pills down."
A woman's voice answered, low and furious.
"You have no idea what you're about to ruin."
Thomas again: "I know exactly what you've been doing. The transfers. The shell company. Keller's payments. All of it."
A chair scraped.
"Think about Daniel and Claire."
"I am thinking about them. That's why I'm ending this."
The recording stopped.
Daniel's hands had gone numb.
Ortiz said, "Your father died less than a year after this?"
"Car crash," Daniel replied.
"Single vehicle?"
"Yes. Brake failure."
Nobody spoke.
Then Emily opened the text file that had been saved beside the recording. The note was short.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, I failed to fix what I helped create. Trust the evidence, not the family name. The key opens Box 417. And if Margaret is still working with Robert Keller, assume my death was not an accident.
Daniel read the last sentence twice.
Ortiz's phone buzzed. She stepped into the hall, answered, then came back with her jaw set.
"We searched the crib. The hidden compartment is empty."
Emily frowned. "That's impossible."
Ortiz looked at Daniel.
"Someone removed the original flash drive after officers entered your house."
