Chapter 17 - The Affair That Turned Into a Weapon

Margaret had been having an affair with Evan Pike.
The baby was his.
Keller confessed that Margaret gave birth early in secret while Thomas was traveling. The infant was sick but stable. She planned to move him to a private care home under another name until she decided what to do.
"Decided what to do?" Daniel said. "He was a baby."
Keller flinched.
"Margaret was terrified Thomas would divorce her, expose the company accounts, and cut her off. Evan said he knew a place outside the county. They put the child in the company truck. Daniel was already in the passenger seat."
Daniel stared at him. "Why was I there?"
"You had been drinking with friends. Evan found you near the old access road and said he would drive you home."
Emily covered her mouth.
Keller continued. "Michael Carter walked into the road near Site 14. He had a folder. Evidence. He was trying to reach Thomas. Evan swerved, hit him, and crashed into a barrier. Daniel struck his head. The baby survived the crash."
"Where is he?" Claire asked.
Keller shut his eyes.
"I don't know."
Ortiz did not believe him. "Try again."
"Margaret took the carrier before Thomas arrived at the lake house. She told me the child would be safe. I never saw him again."
Daniel stood so abruptly the chair fell.
A brother he had never known. A child erased from the family. Maybe dead. Maybe alive.
Margaret was finally brought into the interview room.
Ortiz placed the neonatal record on the table.
"Where is your son?"
Margaret looked at Daniel instead.
"You have enough pain. Leave this alone."
Daniel's voice shook. "Is he alive?"
She said nothing.
"Is he alive?"
"He was placed with people who could care for him."
"Who?"
"You don't need to know."
Daniel slammed both hands on the table.
"You don't get to decide what I need anymore."
Margaret finally lost her calm.
"I decided everything because none of you could survive the consequences! Thomas was weak. Evan was stupid. Keller was a coward. I kept this family standing."
Emily stepped to the observation window, listening from the other side.
Daniel leaned close to his mother.
"You let Emily's father die. You framed me in my own memory. You hid a child. You drugged my wife and my daughter. What family did you keep standing?"
Margaret's eyes filled, but her voice stayed hard.
"The one with your name on it."
Ortiz slid a photograph across the table.
It had been recovered from North Lake Risk Group's storage unit that morning.
A toddler, maybe two years old, stood beside a woman Daniel did not recognize.
On the back: BEN PIKE - ARIZONA.
Daniel looked at Margaret.
"This is him?"
Her face answered before her mouth did.
Then Ortiz turned over a second photograph.
It had been taken only six months ago.
