Chapter 12 - The Furnace Under Detroit

The platform split down the middle.

People moved fast.

Cultivators who had looked bored five seconds earlier were suddenly airborne, clearing the crack before Mason fully understood the floor was collapsing.

Tessa grabbed his coat and pulled.

Too late.

The steel plate beneath him dropped.

Mason fell into darkness.

He hit a sloped chute, bounced twice, shouted something unheroic, and slid forty feet into a chamber beneath the foundry.

Tessa landed beside him far more gracefully.

“You okay?”

“My spine has filed a complaint.”

Above them, voices echoed.

Evelyn Mercer shouted orders.

Then the opening slammed shut.

A circular metal door rotated into place on its own.

Mason and Tessa were trapped underground.

The chamber was enormous.

Old brick walls surrounded a furnace unlike anything Mason had seen. It was not industrial. It was older, built from black stone and bronze plates carved with symbols that looked halfway between circuitry and calligraphy.

The system opened a panel.

[LEGACY RECLAMATION SITE DETECTED]

[NAME: RIVER FURNACE]

[STATUS: DORMANT]

[OWNER: NONE]

Mason smiled.

Tessa saw it.

“No.”

“What?”

“That face.”

“What face?”

“The face you make before touching something worth starting a war over.”

Mason approached the furnace.

A handprint was carved into the central plate.

He placed his palm against it.

The entire chamber lit gold.

Tessa swore.

[RECLAIMER CREDENTIAL VERIFIED]

[LEGACY TEST AVAILABLE]

[RESTORE FURNACE FUNCTION TO 1%.]

[REWARD: PATH COMPLETION]

Mason looked at the structure.

One percent sounded easy until he realized the furnace occupied most of the building’s foundation.

“Any manual?”

[YES.]

A book-sized panel opened with approximately nine thousand pages.

Mason stared.

“Short version?”

[FIX IT.]

“Excellent documentation.”

They spent four hours inspecting channels, valves, inscription plates, and mechanical linkages.

Tessa knew formation theory.

Mason knew repair.

Together, they found three primary failures.

A cracked qi conduit.

A seized vent assembly.

And a missing ignition core.

“The core’s gone,” Tessa said.

“Can it run without one?”

“Not normally.”

Mason’s interface highlighted the Blackstar fragment inside his chest.

[COMPATIBLE IGNITION SUBSTITUTE AVAILABLE]

He went still.

Tessa noticed.

“What?”

“The thing Mercer House wanted.”

“You absorbed it?”

“I think the system did.”

Tessa stared at him.

“Mason, putting an unknown legacy fragment into a pre-collapse cultivation furnace is the kind of decision sect histories describe right before listing casualties.”

“So fifty-fifty?”

“That is not what I said.”

Mason repaired the conduit first.

Then the vent.

Each repair generated Scrap Qi so dense his Tin Skin vibrated.

Finally, he stood before the empty ignition chamber.

He placed both hands against the bronze housing.

The Blackstar fragment left his chest as black-gold light.

It entered the furnace.

Nothing happened.

Mason exhaled.

Then every symbol ignited at once.

The furnace roared.

Heat hit like a wall.

[RESTORATION: 1.03%]

[LEGACY TEST COMPLETE]

[PERSONAL PATH FINALIZED]

PATH: THE RECLAIMER’S WAY

AUTHORITY: RESTORE / REPURPOSE / RETURN

[BREAKTHROUGH QUALIFIED]

TIN SKIN -> IRON SINEW

Tessa shouted, “Mason, wait—”

The furnace opened.

A column of molten-gold qi swallowed him whole.
