Chapter 26 - The Motorcycle That Asked for Help

The motorcycle was a 1976 Falcon 900.
Mason knew that because his father had kept a photograph of one taped inside his toolbox.
He also knew this particular Falcon should not have been capable of climbing two hills, crossing six intersections, and arriving outside Second Shift with no rider.
Yet there it was.
[OBJECT: FALCON 900]
[CONDITION: 17%]
[AWAKENED INTENT: 3%]
[REQUEST: HELP.]
Tessa crouched beside it.
“Awakened objects are rare.”
Ward nodded.
“And usually older than this.”
Mason touched the handlebar.
A flood of impressions hit him.
Night road.
Rain.
A rider leaning low.
A tunnel.
Men in gray coats.
Impact.
Then hiding.
The bike had carried someone away from the Council.
“Who was your rider?” Mason whispered.
The speedometer needle moved.
Numbers changed.
4.
1.
7.
Tessa frowned.
“Hospital patient number?”
Ward’s face changed.
“No.”
He took a marker and wrote 417 on the workbench.
Then beneath it, ELIAS WARD ARCHIVE CASE.
Mason looked at him.
“This bike carried you?”
“Twenty-one years ago.”
Ward’s voice was distant.
“I escaped Ashen Crown once. For six hours.”
He touched the seat.
“They caught me near the river.”
“What happened to the rider?”
“A woman named Mara Bell. Council records officer.”
The bike’s headlight flashed.
Ward inhaled sharply.
“Mara lived?”
Another sequence appeared on the odometer.
An address.
They followed it to a storage facility in Dearborn.
Unit 417 contained boxes.
Hundreds.
Council documents.
Property records.
Harvest reports.
Photographs of civic relics across the Midwest.
Mara Bell had spent twenty years collecting proof.
She had died eighteen months earlier.
The motorcycle had been locked inside with her archive.
Until Second Shift’s reputation somehow reached it.
Mason repaired the Falcon’s fuel system while Ward read documents.
Near dawn, the old man called him over.
“Mason.”
He held a Council map.
Marrow Bridge was highlighted.
Not as a harvest target.
As a seal.
“What does it seal?” Tessa asked.
Ward turned the page.
Beneath Detroit, lines connected seven civic relics into a containment formation.
River Furnace was one.
Marrow Bridge was another.
The document’s title read:
GREAT LAKES BREACH CONTAINMENT NETWORK.
Mason stared.
“They aren’t trying to harvest the bridge.”
Ward’s face was grim.
“They’re replacing it.”
“With what?”
“A Council-controlled anchor.”
“Why?”
Ward pointed to the center of the map.
Under the river.
A black circle.
[VOID PRESSURE ZONE]
Tessa whispered, “If the seal fails…”
Ward nodded.
“The city doesn’t lose traffic.”
He looked at Mason.
“It loses reality.”
The system opened a new warning.
[MAJOR WORLD EVENT DETECTED]
[MARROW BRIDGE REPLACEMENT IS NOT A CONSTRUCTION PROJECT.]
[IT IS A HOSTILE SYSTEM UPDATE.]
Mason looked at the Falcon.
Its headlight flashed once.
The interface translated.
[HURRY.]
