Chapter 13 - Iron Sinew

Breaking through felt less like becoming stronger and more like being professionally disassembled.
Mason’s muscles tightened until he could not breathe.
Then Scrap Qi entered them.
Not flowing around tissue.
Through it.
Every old injury lit up.
The shoulder he had hurt unloading appliances at nineteen.
The knee he had twisted on black ice.
The little scar across his palm from his father’s utility knife.
The furnace found all of it.
[STRUCTURAL DEFECTS DETECTED]
[REPAIR?]
Mason managed one word.
“Yes.”
Pain became educational.
Tessa watched from outside the furnace circle, unable to cross the active formation.
“Breathe!”
“I am!”
“You’re yelling!”
“That requires air!”
The system interrupted.
[HUMOR RESPONSE UNDER STRESS: STABLE]
[MENTAL CONDITION: QUESTIONABLE BUT FUNCTIONAL]
Mason would have argued if his tendons were not currently being rewritten.
The furnace drew discarded intent from the entire abandoned complex above.
Decades of rust.
Broken machines.
Forgotten tools.
Shut-down production lines.
Not death.
Use.
Purpose that had ended.
Mason understood his path more deeply.
A thing did not become worthless because its first purpose ended.
The belief that it did—that was the lie.
His body changed around that idea.
Muscle fibers strengthened.
Tendons tightened.
Joints stabilized.
His Scrap Qi capacity expanded from a puddle into something resembling a tank.
[REALM ADVANCEMENT]
IRON SINEW — FIRST LAYER
STRENGTH +5
ENDURANCE +5
CONTROL +3
SCRAP QI CAPACITY: 31
TRAIT SLOTS: 8
[PATH PASSIVE UNLOCKED: NOTHING WASTED]
Failed repairs return 30% expended qi.
Broken equipment used in combat suffers 50% less efficiency penalty.
Mason fell out of the light onto one knee.
Tessa helped him stand.
Then immediately punched him in the shoulder.
He barely moved.
“Ow.”
“That was a test.”
“You looked happy.”
“I can multitask.”
The River Furnace dimmed behind them.
A new door opened in the wall.
Beyond it sat a workshop.
Old.
Dusty.
Perfectly preserved.
Tools lined the walls.
Schematics covered a central table.
Above the workbench, someone had carved words into steel.
A RECLAIMER DOES NOT ASK WHAT A THING WAS.
ASK WHAT IT CAN BECOME.
Mason touched the inscription.
The system chimed.
[LEGACY WORKSHOP UNLOCKED]
[OWNER REGISTRATION AVAILABLE]
He selected yes.
[OWNER: MASON REED]
Tessa groaned.
“You just claimed a hidden workshop under Mercer territory.”
“Legally?”
“Cultivator law and legally should not be used in the same sentence.”
A pounding sound came from the sealed door above.
Mercer House had found a way down.
Evelyn’s voice echoed through the chamber.
“Mason Reed. Open the furnace.”
Tessa looked at him.
“What now?”
Mason looked around his newly inherited workshop.
Then at a wall full of broken weapons and tools.
The system opened a quest.
[DEFEND YOUR FIRST PROPERTY]
Mason smiled.
“Now we see what the previous owner left in the junk drawer.”
