Chapter 32 - Fighting Something With No Stats

The undefined thing had no structure for Argument Ender to weaken.

Mason discovered this when he hit it squarely in the shoulder and the hammer passed through black static.

[TECHNIQUE FAILED]

[REASON: TARGET DOES NOT REMEMBER BEING ANYTHING ELSE.]

“Rude.”

The silhouette swung.

Its hand brushed Mason’s sleeve.

The fabric turned gray.

Then smooth.

Then vanished.

A patch of skin beneath went numb.

[DEFINITION LOSS: 2%]

Mason backed away.

“Tessa?”

“Working on it!”

Silver qi burned from her torch-blade. It cut the creature, leaving a bright line that closed slowly.

“Light works,” she shouted.

Mara corrected her.

“Intent works. Give it something harder to erase than emptiness.”

That sounded like Reclaimer nonsense.

Which meant Mason understood it.

He looked around the abandoned station.

Everything here had once mattered.

Bus schedules.

Platforms.

Route signs.

Thousands of people going to work, school, appointments, homes.

The physical depot was gone.

The route intent remained.

Mason activated Return.

“West Belt,” he said.

The interface opened.

[RETURN WHAT?]

“Purpose.”

A pulse moved through the platform.

Dead signs flickered.

Letters reappeared.

A route map formed on a blank wall.

The station remembered.

The undefined silhouettes recoiled.

Mason understood why.

Void did not destroy matter first.

It destroyed meaning.

So he gave the place more meaning.

Priya, still holding a steel brace against the damaged column, shouted, “Whatever you’re doing, do more!”

Mason grabbed the old public-address microphone mounted beside the operator booth.

It did not work.

He repaired it in eight seconds.

Static cracked through hidden speakers.

Mason spoke.

“This is West Belt Depot.”

Tessa looked at him.

“What are you doing?”

“Making an announcement.”

“To monsters?”

“To the station.”

He continued.

“Routes Thirty-One, Forty, and Fifty-Seven connect here. Last departure was apparently a long time ago.”

Ward laughed from behind cover.

Mason felt the platform respond.

[LOCAL INTENT: +4%]

He kept going.

“People waited here in the rain. Missed buses here. Fell asleep here. Got dumped here. Probably got proposed to here.”

Mara shouted, “Two marriages, one fistfight, and a birth during the Blizzard of Seventy-Eight.”

Mason pointed at her.

“Excellent lore.”

The station lights brightened.

The silhouettes shrank.

[VOID CONTAMINATION: 24%]

18%.

12%.

The largest undefined figure rushed him.

Mason planted his feet.

Reclaimer’s Brace.

Not against the creature.

Against the station.

He connected himself to benches, rails, tile, buried foundations—anything still carrying West Belt’s identity.

The silhouette struck.

Instead of erasing Mason alone, it collided with thousands of accumulated memories.

The thing tore apart like smoke in a wind tunnel.

The others collapsed with it.

[VOID CONTAMINATION: 3%]

The black frost melted.

Mason released the Brace and nearly fell over.

[NEW TECHNIQUE CREATED]

NAMEPLATE I

Temporarily reinforce an object, place, or willing person’s identity by naming its purpose and acknowledged history.

Ward walked toward him slowly.

“That technique was lost.”

Mason leaned against a ticket machine.

“Found it.”

Mara smiled.

“That’s what Reclaimers do.”

Priya pointed at the column.

“Please reclaim structural integrity before philosophy.”

They repaired the platform.

When the Line Zero train departed, West Belt connected to two more dormant nodes.

The seal map updated.

Marrow Bridge internal condition rose from 17% to 24%.

Mason smiled.

Then the interface opened a hidden message embedded inside the transit network.

It was twenty years old.

Sender: ARTHUR REED.

Mason stopped breathing.

His father’s name glowed in front of him.

[MESSAGE RECIPIENT: NEXT RECLAIMER]
