Chapter 30 - Carter Rail Terminal

Carter Rail Terminal had once been beautiful.

Even abandoned, it was hard to miss.

A vast stone building stood behind fencing and weeds, its windows dark, its main hall empty except for birds, graffiti, and twenty years of political promises.

Mason stepped inside and nearly fell over from the interface response.

[MAJOR CIVIC RELIC]

CARTER TERMINAL

CONDITION: 33%

AWAKENING: 51%

PRIMARY INTENT: DEPART

SECONDARY INTENT: ARRIVE

HIDDEN INTENT: WAIT

“Wow.”

Tessa looked around.

“What?”

“It has layers.”

Ward smiled sadly.

“Stations always do.”

Crowe had sent two Council technicians with them.

Mason disliked both on principle.

Priya came because nobody had been able to stop her.

Logan came because he owned the coat for it.

They descended beneath the main concourse through a maintenance stairwell.

Old tiles gave way to brick tunnels.

The deeper they went, the older the construction became.

Finally they reached a platform that did not exist on any public map.

No rails.

Only a circular stone channel disappearing into darkness.

At its center stood a massive brass mechanism shaped like a clock without hands.

[RETURN GATE HEART]

[CONDITION: 14%]

[STATUS: DISCONNECTED]

Mason approached.

The mechanism began clicking.

One turn.

Two.

Then stopped.

A new panel opened.

[OBJECT IS NOT ABANDONED.]

Mason frowned.

“Who owns it?”

[UNKNOWN.]

That had never happened before.

Ward went tense.

“Back up.”

A voice came from the tunnel.

“You always were cautious, Elias.”

Ward’s face emptied.

A woman stepped onto the platform.

Seventies.

White hair cut short.

Brown leather jacket.

The Falcon 900 motorcycle rolled behind her with no rider.

Mason stared.

Ward whispered, “Mara?”

Mara Bell smiled.

“You look terrible.”

Ward’s cane slipped from his hand.

“You died.”

“Administrative death.”

Logan muttered, “That phrase is becoming too common.”

Mason’s system scanned Mara.

[MARA BELL]

[STATUS: LIVING]

[REALM: UNKNOWN]

[PATH: ARCHIVIST]

[RELATION TO OBJECT: CUSTODIAN]

Mara placed one hand on the Return Gate Heart.

“I kept this offline for twenty years.”

Crowe’s technicians reached for weapons.

Tessa moved between them.

Mara ignored everyone but Ward.

“The Council told you the seal was failing?”

Ward nodded slowly.

“It is.”

“Yes.”

Mara looked at Mason.

“But not because the gate heart is broken.”

Mason’s interface flickered.

[DECEPTION RISK: HIGH]

“Then why?”

Mara tapped the brass mechanism.

“The bridge seal was designed to release pressure through transit nodes. The Council shut them down one by one so they could centralize control.”

Crowe’s technician said, “That is classified misinformation.”

Mara smiled.

“Young man, I wrote the classification policy.”

Priya covered a laugh.

Mara continued.

“The void pressure is rising because the system no longer has anywhere to breathe.”

Mason looked at the abandoned terminal above them.

“So we don’t need one component.”

“No.”

Mara pointed toward the dark circular tunnel.

“You need to reopen the line.”

Mason frowned.

“To where?”

The brass clock clicked.

A dim light appeared deep in the tunnel.

Then another.

Like station lamps turning on one by one beneath the city.

Mara smiled.

“To every place Detroit was told it would never go again.”
