Chapter 47 - The Civic Furnace

The Return Gate needed more power than Mason possessed.
That would have been a problem for a normal cultivator.
Mason had accidentally built a company.
He opened Line Zero connections to every active node.
River Furnace answered first.
Ward’s voice did not cross null space, but his intent did.
HOLD FAST.
Tessa’s node answered from River Freight.
BUILD IT RIGHT.
Priya’s archive node:
DOCUMENT EVERYTHING.
Crowe’s South Tunnel:
FOUNDATION FIRST.
Logan’s stadium node surprised Mason.
LOOK EXPENSIVE WHILE DOING IT.
Mason laughed.
Even here.
The Old River community anchors connected next.
FEED THE BLOCK.
ONE MORE ROUND.
GET HOME.
WE ARE STILL HERE.
Shared intent flowed through Line Zero into the Return Gate.
Not qi alone.
Purpose.
The Reclaimer Interface struggled to process it.
[AUTHORITY LOAD EXCEEDS FURNACE HEART]
[BREAKTHROUGH PATH DETECTED]
NEXT REALM: ALLOY CORE
Ward had explained Alloy Core once.
Most cultivators compressed one authority into a stable internal identity.
Fire becomes Fire Core.
Sword becomes Sword Core.
Earth becomes Earth Core.
Mason’s path did not want one thing.
It wanted compatibility.
Different materials serving one structure.
An alloy.
The system opened a prompt.
[SELECT CORE COMPONENTS]
Mason expected traits.
Instead, it displayed relationships.
SECOND SHIFT.
OLD RIVER.
LINE ZERO.
RIVER FURNACE.
MARROW BRIDGE.
Mason frowned.
“These aren’t mine.”
[CORRECT.]
“Then I can’t use them as a core.”
[CORRECT.]
“What am I supposed to select?”
The system waited.
He understood slowly.
His core could not contain other people’s intent.
It could contain his commitments to them.
Different thing.
He selected:
REPAIR WHEN ASKED.
RETURN WHAT IS NOT MINE.
REFUSE FALSE ABANDONMENT.
KEEP ROUTES OPEN.
DO NOT CONFUSE VALUE WITH PRICE.
ASK BEFORE FIXING WHAT CAN ANSWER.
And finally:
EAT LUNCH.
The system paused.
[LAST PRINCIPLE ACCEPTED WITH RESERVATIONS ABOUT COMPLIANCE.]
Mason laughed.
Then Alloy Core began.
His Furnace Heart collapsed inward.
Reclamation Fire compressed.
Steel Meridian channels folded around it like reinforcing bands.
Every principle became a different metal in an invisible alloy.
Not perfectly compatible.
That was the point.
Real structures carried tension.
Good design managed it.
Pain exploded through Mason.
Vale steadied him.
“Do not lose the gate.”
“Working on both.”
“Your humor is deteriorating.”
“Critical condition.”
The gate reached 18%.
24%.
Returned objects began sorting themselves.
Safe physical items routed toward archive recovery zones.
Hazardous residues condensed into sealed null vaults.
Retained patterns transferred to the Municipal Archive’s spiritual layer, not as people, not as property, but as records capable of answering limited questions.
The Arthur-pattern waited.
Mason looked at him.
“You going?”
“Yes.”
“Will I be able to talk to you?”
“Perhaps.”
“That sounds like a system answer.”
“I learned from infrastructure.”
Mason swallowed.
The pattern touched two fingers to the brim of an imaginary work cap—one of Arthur Reed’s old habits.
“Your father was proud of the man you might become.”
Mason’s throat closed.
“Might?”
“He was a mechanic. He did not trust untested parts.”
Mason laughed through tears.
“Yeah.”
The pattern faded into the archive route.
The gate surged.
[REPAIR: 41%]
[ALLOY CORE FORMATION: 92%]
Then Cora Vale screamed.
Mason turned.
Condemnation marks covered her arms.
Her own authority was attacking her.
A Directorate command had entered through the breach.
[REMOTE JUDGMENT]
CORA VALE — FAILED ASSET.
Mason stared.
Vale looked at the red seals spreading toward her heart.
For the first time, she understood what it felt like to be declared disposable.
