Chapter 40 - What He Refused to Burn

Traditional Furnace Heart cultivators burned resources.

Spirit stones.

Rare herbs.

Bloodline essence.

Captured beast cores.

Some burned years of lifespan.

Some burned emotions they considered inconvenient.

Ward explained all of this while Mason ate noodles at two in the morning.

Mason stopped chewing.

“People burn emotions?”

“Fear. Grief. Attachment.”

“Why?”

“To make a cleaner flame.”

“That sounds like becoming a psychopath with extra steps.”

“Sometimes cultivation history is exactly that.”

Mason’s breakthrough interface waited.

[FURNACE HEART]

SELECT FUEL FOR CORE FLAME.

He considered Scrap Qi.

The system rejected it.

[QI IS ENERGY. NOT FUEL.]

He considered memories.

Rejected.

Money?

[PLEASE BE SERIOUS.]

“Worth trying.”

Tessa sat across from him.

“What do you care about enough that losing it would change you?”

Mason immediately thought of his father’s toolbox.

The system highlighted it.

[VALID FUEL.]

His stomach tightened.

The dented red toolbox was worth maybe eighty dollars.

It had belonged to Arthur Reed for twenty-seven years.

Mason still used the same drawer where his father kept electrical tape even though it made no organizational sense.

Burn it and the breakthrough would be easy.

That was the point.

He closed the prompt.

“No.”

Ward nodded slowly.

“Then no breakthrough.”

Mason looked at the toolbox.

“That’s stupid.”

“Cultivation often is.”

“No. The premise.”

The system reopened.

“What kind of path says I prove I value something by destroying it?”

[TRADITIONAL FURNACE LOGIC.]

“I’m not traditional.”

[OBVIOUSLY.]

Mason stood.

He walked through Second Shift.

Every object carried history.

His Rook.

Argument Ender.

June’s drawing pinned beside the office.

Mrs. D’Amico’s pie tin, never returned because Logan kept forgetting.

A broken transit sign from West Belt.

His father’s toolbox.

He understood his furnace.

A Reclaimer did not burn value.

A Reclaimer burned waste.

Mason opened every failure record in his interface.

Missed repairs.

Wasted Scrap Qi.

Broken components beyond saving.

Rust removed from restored objects.

Corrosion.

Contamination.

Foreign claims stripped from Ward.

Condemnation returned from Mrs. Alvarez.

The things that repairs removed because they prevented purpose.

“Can I burn that?”

The system went silent.

Ward stood.

Tessa’s eyes widened.

Mason repeated, “Can I make my Furnace Heart out of what restoration discards?”

A new prompt appeared.

[UNREGISTERED BREAKTHROUGH METHOD]

[THEORETICAL COMPATIBILITY: 72%]

[RISK: HIGH]

Mason smiled.

“Better than average.”

Tessa groaned.

He initiated.

Every trace of spiritual corrosion he had removed over the last month appeared around him as black-red vapor.

Failure residue.

Void frost.

Broken hostile claims.

Useless qi fragments.

Mason pulled them inward.

Not into his body.

Into a hollow space behind his sternum.

He ignited them.

The flame burned black at first.

Then gold.

Then white-hot with flecks of rust-red.

Pain bent him forward.

Ward shouted instructions.

Tessa held his shoulders.

The toolbox remained untouched.

So did every memory.

Mason burned only what no longer served.

The furnace stabilized.

[REALM ADVANCEMENT]

FURNACE HEART — FIRST FLAME

[CORE FLAME: RECLAMATION FIRE]

FUNCTIONS:

- BURN CORROSION

- BURN FOREIGN CLAIM RESIDUE

- REFINE SCRAP QI

- CONVERT FAILURE INTO REPAIR POTENTIAL

[NEW AUTHORITY: REFINE]

Mason opened his eyes.

Every broken item in the shop glowed brighter.

Ward stared at him.

“You created a furnace that feeds on waste.”

Mason looked at the noodles.

“Can it heat lunch?”

Tessa hit him.

The shop alarm began screaming.

Carla shouted from the office.

“Something is happening downtown!”

They ran to the monitors.

Every remaining powered screen displayed the same emergency broadcast.

Marrow Bridge was closing immediately due to “unexpected structural movement.”

The live traffic camera showed the river beneath it boiling black.

Internal seal condition: 6%.

Mason’s new Furnace Heart ignited.

The breach had begun.
