Chapter 35 - The Water Plant

North Water Works did not look magical.

It looked like concrete, pipes, security fences, fluorescent lights, and men named Gary who had strong opinions about valves.

Mason loved it immediately.

They entered through an access agreement Priya obtained legitimately, which disappointed Logan.

“You enjoy forged credentials too much,” she told him.

“They save time.”

“They create felonies.”

“Also time-consuming.”

The plant manager, Gary—because of course—met them beside Pump Hall Three.

“We’ve got pressure fluctuations and sensor failures. City says your firm handles unusual restoration.”

Mason looked at Tessa.

“What exactly did Priya tell them?”

“That you’re weird but effective.”

“Accurate.”

Mason’s interface showed the deeper problem.

Black void frost spread along a massive supply pipe.

[VOID CONTAMINATION: 49%]

The pipe still physically existed.

Its function was being erased.

Water entered one side and seemed to forget where pressure should go.

Meters returned nonsense.

Control systems lost labels.

One screen displayed nothing but blank boxes where numbers belonged.

Gary swore.

“Never seen that.”

Mason said, “Software issue.”

Tessa coughed.

“What?” Gary asked.

“Spiritual software.”

Mason stepped between them.

“She said municipal software.”

Gary accepted this because municipal software was known to be cursed.

They traced contamination to a sealed maintenance chamber below the pump hall.

Inside, an old transit formation crossed beneath the water plant.

Line Zero.

Someone had installed a Council control node there ten years earlier.

The node had failed.

Worse, it was preventing the civic network from venting void pressure.

“Can we remove it?” Tessa asked.

Mason scanned.

[REMOVAL RISK: CATASTROPHIC WATER HAMMER / SPIRITUAL BACKFLOW]

“Not immediately.”

Priya studied the piping diagram.

“If we isolate this pump train, reroute through Three and Four, and throttle the south header…”

Gary interrupted.

“We lose fourteen percent capacity.”

“For twenty minutes.”

Gary thought.

Then nodded.

“Do it.”

Mason loved engineers.

No speeches.

Just consequences and valves.

They rerouted flow.

Tessa stabilized the formation.

Mason used Nameplate on the contaminated supply pipe.

“You carry treated water east,” he said.

The pipe vibrated.

“Forty-six years. Same route. Same pressure zone. You know what you do.”

Black frost receded.

[DEFINITION REINFORCED]

Mason removed the Council node.

Void pressure erupted.

A wave of nothingness swept through the chamber.

He used Return.

Not to send it back.

There was nowhere to send undefined pressure.

Instead, he opened the repaired Line Zero route.

The pressure discharged into the dormant transit network.

Far below, station lights ignited one after another.

The water plant stabilized.

Gary checked the meters.

“Pressure normal.”

He looked at Mason.

“What did you do?”

Mason wiped sweat from his forehead.

“Turned it off and back on.”

Gary nodded solemnly.

“Works more than it should.”

The system chimed.

[LINE ZERO NODE RESTORED: 3/7]

[MARROW BRIDGE INTERNAL SEAL: 39%]

[STEEL MERIDIAN — THIRD VEIN OPENED]

Then every alarm in the water plant activated.

Not spiritual.

Real.

Power failed.

Emergency lights came on.

Gary looked toward the control room.

“What now?”

Priya checked her phone.

No signal.

Tessa’s face went pale.

Outside the plant, the city skyline went dark section by section.

A blackout rolled across Detroit.

Mason’s interface opened one enormous red warning.

[VOID EVENT HAS ENTERED CIVILIAN INFRASTRUCTURE.]

[THIS IS NO LONGER HIDDEN.]
